Hospital Bed Rentals

I will have my right hip replaced in very late August. I had my left hip replaced almost seven years ago.

This whole hip fiasco is due to me being t-boned on my bike when I was 20...guy ran a red light: I could have been an easy mort but it still irks me.

We live in a two story house. Last time was a sofa bed with pillows and pillows.

It was awful. This time I am planning on renting a hospital bed.

Does anyone here have any insight? I have done all the interwebs homework, which can be "wax on, wax off" in terms of the good and bad opinions.

I am looking for the practical aspects of having done it. The sofa bed extravaganza was an evening at the Opera I do not plan on repeating.

Any insight is appreciated. Bonus points and a handsome reward for any tips on rentals in the Mid-Atlantic.

You might check classifieds to see if someone is getting rid of one cheap instead of renting.

I doubt you will have problems finding a local rental provider.

Typically they send a guy out to set it up, and then take it down when done.
On setup check that it is on casters or has all the footpads (else will scratch the crap out of nice floors) :-/

typically these use long twin bedding, which you will need.

Call your insurance company to see how this gets set up?

If that's not helpful, the hospital where you'll have your surgery jas a whole department of social workers/nurse case managers whose sole job is getting people out of the hospital (it's all about minimizing length of stay) and will know how to get this done.

Invacare makes a good bed

https://mdmaxx.com/products/invacare-ihcs7-carroll-series-cs7-hi-low-bed?currency=USD&variant=38179006120127&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIkq_gxZ7J-AIVCyCtBh1kxwDmEAQYDSABEgLNxvD_BwE

If you buy used remember there’s a good chance someone passed away in the bed just in case that would bother you.

It is interesting, my wife's has our primary insurance and they said they would pay for it, but will not make recommendations on a vendor. I have no idea why or why not...one of the reasons I posted here.

I had my final x-rays and measurements last week. The Dr. is a very well know Johns Hopkins person that did my left hip...he said that I'll go home the day of the surgery, just like last time unless there are issues.

I live in Southern Maryland and the Hopkins folks think I am coming in from the hinterlands...they are not far off

Everyone has been great, btw.

Same with a rental

This is a four day thing for me, week tops...the only thing I am buying for this Op is industrial strength delousing spray.

Thanks, folks. BTW, the left hip is solid gold, even the Doc said no need for a ten year check.

Are you 65+? If so, it may be covered under Medicare.

I'll bet the bed rental company will know the Medicare rules. Who knows, it may be covered and you are not out anything.

Mom had a semi electric bed. Powered back and foot tilts, and manual height adjustment. Pretty easy to assemble/disassemble as the frame was in 2 pieces and the motor snapped on.

What are the features of a hospital bed that you want?

Our regular bed is a power adjustable model from Amazon similar to this one -

LINENSPA Adjustable Bed Base - Motorized Head and Foot Incline - Quick and Easy Assembly*- Full https://a.co/d/9OuMGb2

I recently had abdominal surgery and the bed at the hospital was great for tilting me vertical enough to rotate onto my feet and stand up.

Was pleasantly surprised that my bed at home was perfectly sufficient to tilt me up enough to get me on my feet.

Maybe just buy a new adjustable bed?

A little off the subject...but anyway..
My first satellite dish had just been installed in the 80's and the 10ft dish quit tracking the birds.

I called the installer and he said the actuator arm was kaput. He said it would be a little wait because he couldn't find any junk hospital beds. The actuator arm was used to raise and lower the beds. He found one within a couple weeks.

Do you just have trouble getting comfy or is it getting in and out of the bed that's the issue?

I’ve never had a hip replacement but I’ve had hernia surgery and I can tell you that getting comfortable in the bed wasn’t the hard part, getting in and out of the son of a ***** was the issue.

I don’t know if I would be looking for a bed so much as I would be looking for some sort of sky crane or other apparatus to allow me to get in and out without putting pressure on the stitches and the cut muscles.

Ok, insurance co is no help.

Call orthopedist's office, and ask the doc's MA if there is a recommended vendor for your area. For the bed to be covered by insurance, the vendor will require a prescription from the doctor. So maybe the doctor's office has an idea of who they've used in the past. (Or maybe they don't.)

Call the hospital. Or heck, call any local hospital. Ask for a nurse case manager. These are RNs (or social workers) who are tasked with setting up discharges for inpatients, whether it is to a rehab/SNF or to home with home services. Each hospital floor/ward/service will have a nurse case manager assigned to it. You should be able to get ahold of at least one of these nurses to help you figure out a local vendor. Maybe ask for "discharge planning."

Or else, Google local providers.

This is all I have. Good luck with the recovery!

Reading some of the websites, I saw $199 or so. I thought this was for a day but it’s per month.

Check Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I gave mom's bed away after she passed. It was only 18 months old.

The tilt. As Herr O mentioned, just getting comfy. The last time, on the sofa bed, was toture.

That will be our next bed in a few years but the issue now is I won't be able to climb the stairs to the master BR. The Med Bed is for a few days on the main floor.

Thanks! I will call them Monday.

To all, I appreciate the advice - I was looking for the practicalities and got exactly what I needed. Best and thanks.

I know the OP said he was goign home same day (so much has changed with THA/TKA since I worked as a PT aide in the early 90s!) but the hospital still has those same people. Give 'em a call Monday and they will still be able to help you, or at least let you know of your options for local-ish providers (even here in Gainesville back in the 90s hospital beds often came in from Jacksonville)

I was out the same day last time as well. I hope this time that is the case!

The other thing the Dr. said is they do not recommend PT for 5 days after surgery. They also do not recommend in home PT since a percentage of his patients either received or gave CV to the PT's.

He did not go into specifics.

I still have my PT regime from the last time and will follow it again!
