June of this year we were down at our cabin at the lake. Unbeknownst to us a woman in a cabin down the road was taking care of her sister’s pitbull. While walking my border collie the pitbull broke its cable, raced up the hill and latched onto my dogs leg dragging both my dog and me down the hillside. It didn’t let go until I found a baseball bat size branch and beat it over the head several times. Suffice to say that pitbull is no longer walking this earth.

My young stay at home wife and mother of our infant children goes to answer the knock on the door holding back our beloved, perfectly-conformed, giant Dobie who LOVED the frisbee. She opens the door a crack and says just a minute, I gotta lock up the dog.
The lady (a realtor doing cold calls) says, ‘Oh don’t worry, I love dogs!’ and pushes her way into our house… |

The Dogo Argentino is not a Pitbull. Dogo Argentinos are noticeably larger dogs and their temperament is far more intense. Though sociable the Pitbull is more friendly and outgoing than the Dogo Argentino. They are very similar in appearance, but are entirely different breeds.

I remember when the excuses made for Pit Bulls was to blame the low life owners and poor training. More and more the stories we read are about normal middle class average families where their beloved poopsie who would never harm a soul just goes berserk for no reason. The assumptions/excuses of the past have been proven false yet, some hide their head in the sand and insist that the dogs are fine.

Let's be clear, dogs don't have aggression in genetics, it all depends on the owner

So, you think the couple in the original post did something to their dogs that made them kill their kids?

I have personal experience (7 yrs ago) where my 5yo Pit "mix" was an absolute ham, a lover, nice to all people, and any dog she ever came across. ...one day...I was playing on the floor with my 10 month old son... She was in the play room with us and as he started crawling toward me, it was like a switch flipped, she went into a predatory mode, and aggressively lunged across the room at my son's head. Thank God I was in the room and I was able to intercept her attack... after calling 13 "no-kill" shelters and being honest with the story, nobody would take her, so I made her a 3lb Pot Roast and she rode the needle to pasture...

That would be an easy decision for me, I've had to put down much better dogs.

I don't think is a question of easy decision or not.
I think it would be easy for most to actually make the call But It's not a decision you feel happy about taking, or that brings a sign of relief easy decision hard thing to do

I had (past tense!) some neighbors with three large similar breed dogs. Not pits. Similar. Can’t recall what they were exactly but they certainly got your attention.
Female neighbor walked them and they were the light of her life. Until one day something snapped. And two of them took after her. She was on the roof of her car screaming for help. After she was rescued. Her marriage dissolved. Then she moved. I talked with her one time and she was absolutely CRAZY about how the dogs were her babies. I guess the dogs saw her as dinner??? |

Tough?
Pit suddenly, without provocation but with very bad intent viciously lunges at your 10mos old playing on the floor with you. The decision to put it down is not a tough one. Any other decision would be negligence, IMO. I had to put my Dobie down but not because he was suddenly and inexplicably a monster from a horror film. I was the only person who could control him. When I was not present, he assumed he was No. 1 and he took his job very seriously. |
