Right, I was thinking the same thing.

I've had my M27 for over 4 decades, but if I were purchasing a new .357, that'd be the one....

I have that one with a slightly longer barrel (6”, I believe)
Love it, feels very solid and goes bang every time. The weight keeps the recoil manageable. Can’t go wrong with it.

The best one? One that you train with A LOT.

The worst one is the one you never train with.

The best one is the one you have in your hand and can immediately stop a threat with. A shotgun wins for most. Let's be honest... most of us aren't going to train like some folks advocate here.... they just aren't.... for better or worse.... it's a fact. I've been shooting casually for 55 years .... At 9 I could have stopped a threat with a single shot 12 ga loaded with #8....

I've probably shot my 870 less than 20 times since I bought it used for around $350 a few years ago. It holds 3 00 shells, and I can shoot . Any intruder who disregards the racking noise will pay dearly....

Same with my .45 ACP or Marlin lever .357 ....

For me .... Practicing with my heavy M27 (.357) is simply not enjoyable or cheap and is just not gonna happpen on a regular basis.

Most don't get a PPI on their 911s either although that's good advice.... but let's be real.

My dawg is always loaded and better than ANY spoon fwiw ....unless a tennis ball appears.

Feel free to disregard my .02 worth .... I do all the time .

Never thought I'd be a Glock fan but a couple of years ago a judge awarded me a Glock 19 in addition to my fees in a criminal case. The pistol has a light/laser pointer under the barrel and tritium sights, so about $325 worth of extra crap on it. But the light/laser is the deal for home nightstand defense. The light is so bright I'm thinking some wuss intruder would leave. As for more hardened intruders the extra capacity will hopefully do the trick.

The pistol is a 15+1, which I prefer over only having 5 or 6 rounds. With striker fire, no safety needed or actually on the pistol.

Shoots very nicely at the range.

If that is a bit big, I'd go with a G43 and add Magguts spring to the magazines. The Magguts adds 2 rounds without adding length to the magazine. So 8+1 capacity. The G43 is a little smaller than the G19 and is very comfortable.

I'll add: buy used and reduce your cost. Just do so at a gun store that has a gunsmith that actually tests the weapons prior to sale.

Isn't there a safety blade in the trigger?

Yes, I forgot about that. But I was thinking more traditional thumb type safety. Edit: I have (until I lost it in the lake) a Taurus G2C that has similar trigger blade safety. Horrible to engage that one, I've even had it not fire at the range due to that stupid thing. The G19 is no problem.

Here's the laser/light thing. TLR 8-G, about $250

One night our dog was getting water from the shower (don't ask). I couldn't figure out what the noise was so grabbed the G19 and turned on the light. It was like turning on every light in the house and then some. Scared the dodo out of my wife.

I would buy used if I were looking for a revolver. Any pawn shops around you?

You want to make sure it is not stolen before you pay though, have the cops run the serial number

Another avenue is surplus, either military or police. Classic Firearms has former police Glock 22 in S&W 40 for $399, 15 round mag capacity. Also former police Glock 17 9mm for $429, 17 round mag.

Dogs, yappy dogs, are an essential part of the farms "layered" defense. We tried the motion detector lights but every fox, deer and varmints that wanted the mean streets here triggered them...it was like Saturday Night Fever in varmint breeding season.

Now I can, with one flip of a switch, light the outside up and, thanks to another posters here recommendation, I have a hand held light that can see for a long, long way.

In addition to the Ruger I had, until lost at sea, a Mossberg 20ga pistol grip shot gun with an 18 and 1/2 inch barrel. Minimal recoil, nice mix of rounds since we have no children in the house.

I am thinking of getting another one although I may go .410

My wife also has a night stand revolver in a caliber to her liking.

Lastly, I have the neighborhood rifle, shot gun and pistol range so I know what the folks in the farm community have.

I know the above sounds excessive, but we are a long way from the last trolley station. Preparation is reality. I also have layered generators for big storms.

If we need more than that, the SHTF bigly.

In late August I picked up another pistol from the PD property room. S&W SD9VE, an OK piece but it just feels wrong in your hand. Retail is in the $350 range and used prob around $225 to $250.

When I went to sell it to my local gun shop, they declined. "We have too many of that model, one in the case and 4 in the back". So off I went to another shop.

So at least in my 'hood, there is plenty of used stock to choose from.

At least that I was told😎

Here is a good link: https://www.gunmann.com/single-action-revolvers/

I have a Ruger Vaquero. I have moved to an all 9m fleet except the Vaquero.
Who has been feeding you such nonsense? A Single Action, in this day and age of much more modern wünder guns? We all know it takes a minimum of a pintle mounted Ma Deuce on top of the nightstand to hold off home invaders...

My nightstand gun for, well, my entire adult life. Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. Much more modern, with adjustable sights. And dishwasher safe.

Excessive, how many dogs do you have?

Shame about the ranch rifle being lost at sea, same thing happened to mine
