My local Chevron has now gone over $7/gal for 91 octane. Those wild “conspiracy theories “ of $10/gal is toeing the the line of reality…and I think it’s going to get far worse
|
Gas is down to $3/gal -ish here in CT. Just in time for mid-term elections

I stopped for gas yesterday. I have an option to buy it, but I avoid the gasohol. I use the 87 no corn content for my El Camino and lawn equipment. I find it interesting that the price bump from the huge government subsidies makes E-10 so much cheaper. And the price bump from regular to premium is not that much. |
10% ethanol lowers price by 13.6%...
|
I bought no-E 90 for 4.04 two days ago....
Regular 87 at my goto station has been at 3.07.... not even a typical storm spike. |
Well... that didn't last... filled up yesterday at my regular station ... 3.07. Drove by it this morning.... twas 3.49.
|
We are getting screwed royally in CA!!
|
$3.97 for reg here today.

Where's Rusnak.... out in his punkin' patch I'm sure, but wish he'd chime in with his "insider's" perspective to explain it. |
Multiple reasons
Gas tax in Cali is high They have strict gas standards for refineries to meet If Cali shortages happen refineries outside of state can't send in supply since they don't meet Cali standards I believe Cali has 17 refineries. 6 of those have been down for normal fall scheduled maintenance or unplanned downtime. Supply is very tight. Just like there is a "Porsche tax" there is a Cali tax. I am sure there are other causes. |
$3.97 yesterday for reg.
$4.44 today! This is the reason they are giving... "One of the biggest factors driving the increase continues to be a BP Refinery in Ohio that was shut down last month after a fire." |
Just filled up the wife's Volvo , paid $3.029 for 87 octane .

Besides that, your "facts" are wrong We have been, and still are, a net energy exporter. We were a net energy exporter at the end of 2019. We were a net energy exporter in 2020. (Consumption crashed in 2020 so it is not surprising we had a high net export during the last half of 2020) We were a net exporter of energy in 2021. We are still a net exporter in 2022. Crude release from the emergency reserve makes it more difficult to determine the current extent of net export. The following gives an explanation. https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/The-US-Is-Still-Energy-Independent.html The following is info from EIA from earlier this year. https://www.eia.gov/energyexplained/us-energy-facts/imports-and-exports.php You can go the the following and see the latest raw data for net crude (net import for decades) and all petroleum products (net export). Pick the data you wish to review. https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/PET_MOVE_NETI_DC_NUS-Z00_MBBLPD_M.htm Also, OPEC+ cut the quota by 2 million a day. OPEC+ has been missing the quota by 3 million a day for months on end. Saudia Arabia, UAE, and Kuwait have managed to hit past quota. Other members have missed by millions of barrels a day. I do expect SA, UAE, and Kuwait to see less output moving forward. I also expect the other members that have missed past quota to continue to increase their production. I am sure that those increases will not make up for the losses of the other three. The cut will still be significant though it won't be 2 million a day. Hopefully a million which is still significant. (A million is a very optimistic hope) |

https://www.houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/energy-environment/2020/05/11/369209/more-oil-and-gas-bankruptcies-could-be-on-the-way/ Houston oil and gas companies are reporting billions in losses for the first quarter of 2020, and the next few months are not looking much better. As Texas oil continues to hover around $20-25 per barrel, companies are slashing budgets and cutting workers. Houston-based Diamond Offshore Drilling has already filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid the conoronavirus pandemic. And experts who watch the industry say more bankruptcies are on the way. Charlie Beckham specializes in oil and gas bankruptcies at Haynes and Boone in Houston. He spoke with energy reporter Kyra Buckley about why companies are vulnerable during the oil price crash. Where you saw a lot of the interest in the oil and gas industry over the last 10 years was from investors who flooded money into the only gas industry generally on a junior basis — meaning they loaned money to oil and gas companies at generally low interest rates with an expectation that there was such tremendous cash flow in the oil and gas industry that it would be easy for companies to repay those loans on a timely basis. That simply has not happened. Instead, you’ve had what we’ve seen the last month of oil going negative, which was an anomaly. But still oil is low today, in the $20s, and it’s simply not high enough to repay the billions of dollars of debt that was invested in the industry over the last decade. |
Actually, about two years ago, our government decided to destroy the oil/gas industry and said so. Then they went about doing exactly what they said. Now we see the results. We can pretend it is something else...but we know it is not.

Down again today to $4.15 for reg.
|
I founds red diesel for $5.99 today for my tractors. Cheapest fuel around.

Because they can ... and have a convenient scapegoat to blame? Who really knows... follow the $$$. At my goto station recently, it was 3.07 (usually a low cost leader here), and then jumped to 3.49 overnight.... where ALL the local stations seemed to top out. It's slowly dropped to 3.38 at mine. There is usually a .25 delta between Sheetz stations here depending upon location, and all paying the same price... out of the same tankers. The prices posted in CA are obscene... sure they have different blends and taxes.... about .85 per gallon give or take. The rest of the CA delta is in pure profits.... and Biden .... He must like us better tho' :D $$$$ .... |
I just got home from a trip to Omaha.
Gasbuddy is a real savior (saver?) Around here, most everyone is at $3.69, but about 30 miles out of town, in the middle of nowhere Minnesota, (St. Charles) there's a gas war or something going on. $3.47 where we filled up. Same thing around Des Moines / Ankeny. $3.59 or $3.69 everywhere, except 3 stations within 2 blocks where they're all $3.27. In Omaha, everything was $3.49 / $3.59, except a station in Underwood, IA, just east of Omaha, same $3.27 for a gallon. We drove the wife's Impala, and the wind had a effect on our gas mileage. One the way out, driving into the wind - Red flag warnings out - couldn't break 29mpg, 28.8 was the best it would get to. Driving home, this is still an average, didn't reset, it rose to 29.9 average for the trip. |

So, climate goals are clearly affecting energy security and as this is now getting codified into Federal law, will continue. Good luck! |
^^^^ There is no shortage of gas anywhere in the USA, oil is at $85/bbl, and gas prices are not reflecting this in many places.
Follow the $$$ .... |
Down another 6 cents here today to $4.09 for reg.
