Yesterday, we just bought a 2023 Honda Ridgeline RTL. Had everything I was looking for in a truck. I admit I’m not manly enough for a full size truck, I do love having the SUV type interior with a truck bed in the back. And the most useful truck bed ever! Even has a trunk. You can tell Honda put a lot of thought into these vehicles.

Oh, and I paid $1900 under MSRP. Two years ago, when I went looking at these trucks, they had none on the lot and you could just get on a waiting list.

Axel approves of the purchase!

Rough to get older Paul. But it beats the alternative.

It makes me wonder as well. I’ve never seen so many new, expensive cars as in the last two years. I always wonder who is paying these premiums, (not to mention the list price), for all of the new Range Rovers and MB G-63 wagens I see everyday. Maybe it’s the extra status from everyone knowing how much they really paid for them(?) Beats the hell out of me.

Anyhow, car dealers being mercenary fks who do business as though they only care about the immediate future is nothing new. In fact, legend has it that they earned their well deserved reputation after the end of WW2 when cars were extremely scarce and demand was high. They basically did exactly what is described in the OP but 75 years ago. As my old man used to say, “it’s as old as the hills.” All you can do is vote with your wallet.

As you read through these posts, you see one constant: everyone who purchased from a Honda dealer came away happy.

Been looking for a lightly used ATS-V, and just cannot pull the trigger- they were relatively unpopular cars which even the lowest miles CPOs were under $40K a few years ago.

Anyone stupid enough to sign a note with the knowledge that:

1)-rates are hyper-inflated
2)-prices on vehicles are hyper-inflated

deserves what they get. No vehicle is worth this much BS.

I'm 68 years old and have never ever bought a brand new vehicle.

I guess I never felt I had the budget to do so. Didn't want the payments. Or maybe just wanted to spend money on other things.

I've had great experiences buying from Auto Trader, eBay, and Craigslist.

Still have my '02 Silverado purchased in '05 with 90K on the clock - now with 235K and runs great. That one did come from a dealer who was a landscape client of mine - I told him what I was looking for and he found it in Georgia and brought it down for me. Out the door $12K.

And my '97 Volvo 850 5-speed wagon was only $6K from eBay. Only 79K one-owner miles.

I also have a good friend who owns a repo business - family owned for 60 years and is global. Back in the 80's I got two from him. Those were great cars and very inexpensive.

Going to buy something new would be a new experience, that's for sure...

I also bought from one of my older brothers - an '83 Honda Accord LX hatchback in '91. I think the mileage was around 50K. It was in almost brand new shape. Great car and I sold it in '97.

We have been looking to replace our 2008 4Runner, so I went to the local dealer where we got this one (new in 2008 for $24,500. end of model year, etc., base model SR5, still very nice..) They had 3 used ones, no new ones and showed me a 2021 used low miles, higher grade model for $48,500. I just walked away. At the same time I had the truck inspected and an oil change while there. They said it needed a steering rack, ball joints, water pump, front calipers and some other little stuff. I asked the advisor if it passed, he said, yes no problem. So I took it to an independent garage and asked for an inspection. All he said it needed was the front calipers and rotors while he was in there. So I did that. So the Toyota dealer tried to screw me on both ends!! Low life batards!

I asked my Honda dealership manager why they didn't mark up the msrp when selling. (as others do)
He said he would lose most of his business if doing so.

I will be a returning customer.

Japanese business model that will once again come to haunt the big 3.

I know someone that paid msrp for the civic type R (43k no markup).

^^^ He was very fortunate. The dealership here said that they have no chance of getting one in.
It's a small dealership...my SI was the only one they could get in 2022

They can ask for a $10k markup all day long, doesn't mean they are going to get it. I was looking at a VW Tiguan in late September of last year and called a few dealers. I talked to a sales leach at one dealer who said he had what I was looking for but that they wanted $10k ADM. I laughed and told him no way in this market, he quickly went down to 5k, then got his manager on the phone who waived it immediately, They were such sheisters, that I hung up and called the next dealer. Found one for 2k under MSRP, but those negotiations lasted a good 3 hours over text.

The finance guy was against the whole ADM, he said it was no way to run a business as it only pissed off the customer and kept them under water when they wanted to trade their cars in a few years.

15% of all auto loans are over $1K in payments, and people are still buying out new cars with 2nd stickers and all.

Jeez, and I thought I was bad about "needing" cars.
