I'm glad I grew when I did for many of the reasons mentioned in this thread. I'd hate to be kid now - for lots of different reasons.

^ The movie experience has waned. Too darned expensive, and not as special anymore.
In the 70's-80's matinees were a good way to pass the time. Even rarer- Drive in movie theaters. The first movie I ever saw was the "Poseiden adventure" in 1972. I was... 2. Dad took the 66 911. I fit very fine in the back. It was a drive in and I remember it well. Specifically playing out front the screen before the movie started. Perhaps another thing young kids won't experience- Ernest Borgnine. ![]() Here's ours out in the mountains. We need to support it, but it's about an hour drive each way.

^^^^^^ Wow! The days of drive ins is long past, but I wonder if it would be a safe experience now days. The first movie I remember was at a drive in. It was the Disney animated movie of Bambi we watched from the back seat of our parents' car.

There are a few diff drive-in movies still going in my area....in the summer.
Gives the kids a chance to talk and what-not....that they can't do in a theater.

I love the rotary phone reference - as I also love the "reaction" vids with kids that have never seen one.
As a nearly 49yo father I have almost gained permission to lecture on random and unimportant things - but even people my age don't know the "core" of the original area codes. It was based on how important the place was and how long it took to dial on a rotary. NYC - 212 (fastest given the restrictions of the format). Albuquerque - 505 (not so fast)... And on the topic of phones, kids today won't ever keep a dime or quarter in their shoe to call home.

G'day!

Grew up in Norfolk - until 10th grade when we re-located to Florida.
In Norfolk, the Norfolk Drive-In was right across the road (Va. Bch. Blvd.) from our neighborhood (Fairlawn Estates) and we could see much of the screen from our bicycles outside the side fence. Came in handy for those R-rated movies....lol. I do remember going there with the family on numerous occasions including seeing "The Green Berets" with John Wayne when it first came out and my Dad was still alive....

Used to stay out until we heard the 9 o'clock gun. That was from the Marine Barracks at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

the glint of 50 cell phones in the foreground at the movie theatre? that ended the theatre experience for me.
the stink of the fake cheese nachos didn't help, either. |

I'm so far behind on movies that I can probably watch many Oscar winning movies at this point for free with commercials. And have real cheese. |
