One of my operators loves Peet's MD. It is a bit much for me. I prefer Peet's "Off the Grid"

Reviving this thread as I'm thinking of getting an espresso maker. Do you have one Bill?

Anyone here use one?

Lots of us. What's your budget? Do you do milk drinks or just straight espresso?

straight espresso...maybe with a twist. As for budget I can do a couple hundred.

So, I'd look at a used Gaggia classic. Or honestly, the beginner machine that's been getting good youtube reviews is the little DeLonghi Stillosa ($100 on sale now) or Linea. They require some tweaking of the portafilter but are really good for what they are. You'll need a grinder, as important as the machine. Some good ideas here:https://coffeegeek.com/guides/feature-guides/best-budget-coffee-grinders-for-2025/ -the Baratza is around 100-150 and time proven.

Yes it's a Vibiemme Domobar Super and a Mazzer grinder. Not a very good pic. I've had it for about 20 years and happy with it. A friend has a Rocket E61 that is a similar beast.

I'm very new to espresso (and coffee as well) but for the past year or so we've had a machine there are three things I would prioritize if I were buying again- 1-Time to heat up (portafilter included) 2-quality and quantity of steam and 3- easy and precise adjustment on the grinder.

I do slightly milky drinks though so you can obviously ignore #2.

Oh and I'd consider a grinder that has a big hopper and uses a timer instead of the single dose thing where you weigh beans and then put in grinder. seems like it would be quicker.

I am a snob..but not about my coffee. while I avoid the 7/eleven swill, I can drink most cups. diner coffee, office coffee.

my home cup is simply pre-ground stuff from Costco, done in a pour-over. I dont grind daily. screw that. I got a life to live and other stuff to be snobby about. like I will side-eye the dude using crappy fishing gear. hahah..

true story.

I once went into Peets coffee and looked the female cashier straight in the eyes, and said outloud, "I need some Major-Dicks"

she replied, "okay, dont we all? I dont judge"

me: "I should have played that out in my head first before I said it"

"coffee is on me"

"major thanks"

then she laughed!!! finally.

I’ve had plenty foo foo coffee drinks, they are fine, just not for me.

My go to while out and about is McD’s black. At home I’ve settled on Dunkin Donuts medium roast, and just drink it black.

I’m so boring.

No sir. To actually appreciate the taste of coffee, black is the only way to go. Isn’t the saying once you go black, you’ll never go back?

Nothing was even close to that prior.

One key pointer he gave was to not buy burnt/over-roasted beans (like in the OP link)

Reading back over this thread just now and I saw this. Not sure if Island is still around, but how could he tell that Motherload Coffee was burnt or over roasted by the website? Had he said "when I tried it, I thought xyz of it"

What an a$$hat..... Some things never change.

Stopped by the local roaster while out and about...

A little disappointed they're no long using the Gulf livery bags..

Mexico Ki-Saya beans.. a bit expensive $24/lb but what the heck..

When I picked out this bag of coffee, the woman working there commented is was just roasted yesterday... and they only received the beans last week..

I'd say its fresh.

May I ask how you prepare a cup of that coffee for yourself? Black?
And I think that cost is probably fair.

That pound is likely only 12oz or 0.75 pound.

I do pour overs, French press or AeroPress... Usually since I'm only making one cup its Aeropress.

I see Peets in the supermarket for $13-14/12oz = $1.16/oz

The roaster I usually go to prices vary from $18-75/16oz, the beans I just picked up

$24/16oz $1.5/oz... So I pay a bit more for coffee roasted locally, by a small family owned business...

The owner of Georgios... travels few time a year to coffee producing regions to source beans... I like Peets... but I like supporting a local business better.
