I used to wonder why Baby Che could not get along with anyone. Used to, I say.

Last Tuesday I went for a spirited 350-mile motorcycle ride on 13 year-old tires.

Ted, loved the video with Big Red. I think that's the BR reincarnation after the first one was totaled?

I'm curious...Big Red's lap time @ Willow?

Apples & Oranges, but...Here's Jack:

My response to him was along the lines of: a. how many years will it take you to drive 75,000 miles? and b. would you still want to drive on that tire after 10 years or more.

He got the point.

True, a very professionally run team. We were pitted next to BR at their home track. They had the fully stocked stacker trailer and several support mechanics. Amazing all the configurations and versatility they have built into that street/race car.

Apples & Oranges, but...Here's Jack:
Big Willow is my home track. Jack's 10 year old time was impressive.
It is apples and oranges as the Big Willow racing surface has rapidly deteriorated in the last 10 years. Times today are much slower than 10 years ago.
The bumps and ruts and uneven surface chowder up the fragile lightweight open wheel race cars that now try to avoid racing on it.
The good news is next month half the track is being resurfaced while the other half gets crack fill and slurry.
Then next year the second half will get resurfaced, lap times should be falling soon at Big Willow.

When BR and I raced that Saturday everyone's morning qualifying times were a second slower than the test day the previous day.
In qualifying BR was second and we were third .4 of a second behind.
We had 650hp and BR was pulling me 2 or 3 car lengths on both the front and back straights.
Man those older Mustangs are fast.

10 years ago I bought Andy Porterfield's last race car.
Andy's best at Big Willow was a 1:18 in this car.
The car had been sitting for 3 years, on 3 year old slicks the first time for me driving it with minor prep my best was a 1:24.
This last year with much tuning thanks to an ex-engineer from Richard Childress racing I plan to improve my time on the new surface at Big Willow.
Big Willow was finally added to Iracing, so I've been on the simulator practicing for our return to Big Willow.

About 3 years is my limit on MC tires. YMMV.

Some think so.
I think my trailer tires were prematurely damaged from axles binding (no differential) when maneuvering and making sharp turns in the storage lot.
Now I make sure to straighten out the trailer to avoid any twisting axle bind when parked.

+1
I have a feeling Darwin is ready to give an award for such intelligence.
Remember the old phrase "Buy a $20 helmet if you have a $20 head"?
I think the 13 year old tires is akin to "Ride on $10 tires if your life is worth $10"!

Sure they do. I remember, several years ago, talking to a friend who was too cheap to put new tires on his trailer, he said they have plenty to tread and not a lot of miles. Then he told me how old they were .
Needless to say, we were all going to a track event the following week. He had 3 tires go out on his trailer coming home. And even though I keep fresh tires on my trailers, but this still can happen.

And these were only 2 years old.
I started paying attention to date codes after one the guys that works for, had new tires put on his wife's car at a local Toyota dealership after they pointed out that the current tires were close to the wear bars. So, 3 days later, his wife experienced a tire failure, and the tire shop that she ended up at, pointed out that the "new" tires that the dealer just installed were 8 years old .
The dealership did make everything right, but those tires should have never been installed. I have found that some of the major chains won't even install out dated tires, even if you just want them for rollers.

Thanks Ted...somehow I doubt the 2009 Mustang on that list resembles my stock one much at all. However, did appreciate the times posting.

Go get 'em!

Holy Sheet! Just finished that Motig piece. Generous rules indeed. I doubt that you could find a single piece on my '09 Bullitt model Mustang that is on that "09 Mustang" race car. Thanks for the link. Racing has certainly become more technical than it was during the old Trans-Am days..
