Everything is broken and I think I’m going to buy a new Truck…
It’s been a crappy couple weeks for vehicles around here…
The wheel bearing went in my wife’s Cayenne in the way to Moab. That’s fixed now. My high mileage Tundra has a broken front 4X actuator from when someone hit something (nobody is owning up to it) and tonight the tailgate handle snapped when I was trying to load up skis for tomorrow. New actuator and handle are now ordered. My Cayenne Turbo S transmission let me down on the way to Edmonton on Wednesday. I rented a car for a couple days and went and recovered the Cayenne today with the Tundra and the car trailer. I don’t want to afford a new truck right now but I can’t afford to have junk either. It cost me nearly $3000 this week in lost billable hours screwing with junk. I looked at a new tundra todays and am going to look at another on the way home from the ski hill tomorrow. Anyone have a 23/24 tundra? What are your thoughts on the Turbo V6?

I couldn't afford to buy in new but wanted a truck to pull the trailer effortlessly. Found a duramax truck a few years ago with only 24000km for a reasonable price for the time. Now the darn things are north of $100k!
Hope the inventory has loosened up on the new trucks so you can find a decent deal. Unreliable vehicles suck.

When it rains, it pours...
Buy used and get stuck replacing something big and expensive, or buy new and pay through the nose... Cheaper to fix the stuff on hand. 3k for a bruce Jenner rebuild. Okay. Salvage yard engines... Okay. Rebuild the PCM. Okay. New truck? 70k... Not okay. lol

If you really do a lot of towing especially heavy loads it's hard to beat a dually . The wheelbase/weight/four rear wheels make them VERY stable . If diesel the torque is impressive .
The downside is turning radius of an ocean liner , difficult to park and buy in cost is high . Clean used is the way to go in my opinion . In the frozen north cold starting could be an issue . |

I have a friend that is a cotton farmer in West Texas, he just bought two new Tundras and loves the Twin Turbo V6. He was a domestic pick-up truck owner before switching to Toyota.
He bought the TRD Pro (430-hp) as his personal truck for $70ish and the base model Tundra as a farm truck. He gets 18-mpg. Like you, I've had a barrage of issue with old cars lately, the icing on the cake was recently getting stuck in a Hospital parking garage, I had to Uber home and then go back late in the day with my wife driving me where I proceeded to repair my car in the Hospital parking garage...so annoying As a result, I'm in the market for a new(er) SUV, I am looking at the Lexus LX600 SUV but there is a 2-year wait and any models that are currently available are viciously marked-up..$30k! So, considering a gently used LX570 with the good old lazy thirsty V8. Good luck. Yasin

That's exactly why I recently got a dealer fluid and filter kit for my 155K mile 957. $600 for the kit will be a lot cheaper than putting another box in the truck. Sorry to hear about all this trouble, it's a lot to manage.

I have a 2023 Tundra Platinum. I’ve listed my complaints here before if you do a search. I guess the main issue I have is that I’m a Chevy guy and this ain’t a Chevy. It’s little things. As far as the V6 goes, it’s a beast. I wish the Toyota had limited slip like the Chevy because it spins the ‘tire’ with ease. And gas mileage? Usually about 15-16 on the highway.

I heard something about trouble with the waste gates on the new Tundras. Seems they are extremely hard to access.

Great opportunity for you Billy!
You can't afford to wait on repairs for productive equipment. That's why farmers (around here) buy a new $400,000 combine every 3 years. Nothing wrong with the old one, but something MIGHT go wrong just when you need it the most. Don't overlook the value of retail therapy. Buying something you want feels good! When I was single I used to buy myself something every time a girlfriend dumped me. I got a BMW R1100 RT, a 911, a bulldozer, and a Cartier watch that way. My friend told me I was going to either quit being such a prick or build a bigger garage!

The price of vehicles has got ridiculous. New trucks $70k plus! Sorry to hear of your vehicle woes UB. You are young enough you can treat yourself to new but what about a demo model or one that comes with a factory warranty? I bought a 2011 Lexus RX350 back in 2014. I got an extended warranty which turned out I did not need. Toyota Corp makes great vehicles. I got it at a discount of 20% from new. I love the way Lexus treats me. Their service is great but expensive. My wife's 2002 Camry or my Lexus if the estimate for fixing or service is too great I go to my indy shop.
Having said that my indy shop owner just got renovicted from his leased garage!. Good luck in your search. Not so much luck but due diligence. Cheers, Guy |

Ain't nobody got time for junk. I always buy new ( Chevy) pick ups run them to 150k buy another
You don't have to spend 70k I bought a 1500 Lt duramax in May that was 52k out the door The 3.0 Duramax is a fantastic motor 30 mpg without a trailer 19-20 with Did the dealer have 70k trucks? Yep lots of them I left them for someone else

I love my 2016 F150 w/ 3.5 Ecoboost. 12k towing capacity is more than I need.
And the guy who bought the house across the street is a Ford engineer who just moved here from Denver. We got to talking about the 3.5 engine, he talked up the new 3.5 turbo hybrid they came out with. Also told me they purchased an early 3.5 truck to tear down and inspect with an engine with 600k on the clock, no rebuild.

Great anology UncleBilly. I laughed like hell over that. I felt the same way when I had to repair a busted spark plug in my 2010 Cayman. Took over two months of aggravation, knuckle busting, swearing and praying to effect the repair. Never again. Sold the car shortly after that. Now own a low mileage 2014 Audi TT and wife’s car is a pretty much trouble 2014 Volvo XC70 wagon with 106K on the odo. At 77, I’m done with rebuilding and repairing cars. Volvo will probably go down the road in the spring and I’ll buy another used low mileage one. I won’t buy new, way to expensive and we don’t put a lot of miles on the vehicles since we’re retired. Good luck with your vehicle search…and please recycle your plastic bags!

I just drive really old high mileage 1980s cars and keep them properly maintained. Way cheaper. I have not had a car payment in this millennium, and maintenance is way cheaper than a car payment. And it helps when the cars are going up in value, not depreciating. Both cars are conversation starters with strangers asking about them.
I don't tow much more than a light utility trailer however. I have no need for a tow pig.

I'm looking to replace my 2011 Chevrolet LTZ with a Tundra Limited in the future. I don't have any issues with the Chevy yet. But, began looking. Been looking mostly on Car Gurus. Seems prices have came down since last year. What I noticed are some deals on older models with less miles than a newer with higher mileage.
I've eliminated all vehicles from the midwest and northeast from the search. Good luck with your search. I've found good deals on line. Bought my last 3 vehicles this way. The last 2 were one year searches and they ended up from local dealers. I know you need something sooner though. Last edited by gduke2010; 11-25-2023 at 10:25 AM.. |
