"arson investigators determined that after Orr was arrested, the number of brush fires in the nearby foothill areas decreased by more than 90 percent."

Wow!

This is the current wildfire map of the US. The number of fires is fairly typical of any given time. Of course, the 100s of other wildfires are not in populated areas so we hear nothing about them. The fires occur, consume all the fuel they can and then they go away. Always have, always will. Part of the natural process. Establishing large populations within, and surrounded by, the fuel is probably not the best idea we've had as a species. Massive controlled burns and/or clear-cutting (i.e., getting rid of the fuel) are the only realistic prevention measures.

I've seen a few videos that have started showing up on various locations around the net. One in particular of some palm trees near a McDonalds sign really show the impact of the wind.

It's hard to imagine how with a dry environment and that sort of wind, how anything could be done, regardless of the amount of planes, helicopters, etc.... It's pretty horrific to ponder.

I've seen here on the board over the years several comments about the possibility of preventative measures that could/should be performed. I'm sure no amount of preventative measures would completely stop this sort of thing, but I could see how it would be possible to reduce risk and or reduce impact.

I'm also sure that while a lot of these are likely natural, there are probably also some that are based on arson activity (clearly as some have been caught).

As previously stated, these sorts of catastrophic events are usually due to a combination factors that combine to make a perfect storm. And it would not surprise me, especially in an area with as many people as LA (more people means more evil/troubled/crazy/bad people), if there were people that take advantage of the chaos for their own gain.

On that theme, I saw an article that some criminals have been caught attempting to set fires with the goal of creating more evacuations. After the homeowners clear out, they move in and start breaking into homes. People are sick.

I've watched a dozen videos of the fire, and it's still hard to comprehend. Days and days of that sustained wind and gusts of 90 mph would be devastating enough around here. Add fire and it's just unimaginable.
Prayers for the people affected by the fire.

We can only hope they are some of the folks found dead in the fires.

They better get to work on revegetation before it stops smoking.

Run the fire retardant planes dropping seeds for grass, wildflowers, sagebrush or whatever. Trees and shrubs they can get from nurseries in the valley

Of course, the map is somewhat deceiving as all the icons make it look like these fires are equal. In most places, they are very small, contained, and or in areas where the population and damage are very minimal. Highly populated areas are better protected.

Just a legend shows a lot (many are controlled/contained) ...as does a filter to only show larger fires. Most are/were an acre or less. Controlled burns are already used in many areas. Overall, the nation does a pretty good job of fire protection.

It is also interesting how they are reported.

The current fires in CA are reported separately (dozens of small fires) even though they are all burning at once....so if you filter for only large fires, the current CA blaze does not even show up.

Serious question - what do you do with all the damaged material before contemplating rebuild . There must be thousands of tons of ash and burnt rubble . Thousands of car and truck carcasses . Tons of brick and roof tile rubble . And on and on . What the heck do you do with all of it ?

My sentiments exactly! Either that or their homes burn or better yet, both.

Doesn't nature usually do that automatically after a fire? I seem to remember photos of Australia after the fires they had there a few years back, and I think there were photos of green sprouts days after the fires passed through an area.

Some kinds of seeds are activated by fire - or at least a lot of heat. A lot of northern wild flowers require a number of hours below freezing for them to sprout. But I don't think adding some native seed to the area would hurt.

"Fortunately" following fires, there's a lot less debris than after something like a hurricane. In the mid 90s, I went to the keys for spring break a year or two after hurricane Andrew hammered Miami, Homestead, etc.... As we drove around the outskirts of Miami (not sure if it was 997 or Florida's Turnpike) the sides of the road, both sides, for miles and miles, had huge piles of debris (20-30' tall). Presumably, they got it all away from the city and populated areas, and then had to find a place to put it and then move it a second time. The piles were mostly a mix of building materials and plant/tree, but there were also plenty of large home appliances mixed in, washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, etc...

Wait for the rainfall and floods in a couple months...

That's going to be a huge problem.
