This is totally consistent with your position on "California Haters"

They weren't going to tear them down for months so they allowed some of the Park Rangers to live in them. Ranger Chuck who I worked with got one and it had a converted garage he let me use. I was 18 years old, a seasonal park maintenance worker and living right on the beach in Malibu. It was glorious.

But, all good things come to an end, seasonal workers were let go for the winter and I joined the Army.

I could see some of those damaged homes becoming another extension of the park system.

I see buy out from older folks who wouldn't be able to stomach a long drawn out construction process. If they do, insurance will not pay full pop to replace the high end, architectural gem of a custom homes ( All insurances are sq footage people) and I am not talking about those higher end, big sq' cookie cutters homes in many other parts parts of the country. The custom work are so complex that the insurance normally will not pay to get it back to where it was unless its documented, I suppose? I know a number of those homes out there like the back of my hands, that's was how I made a living for about 15-20 years between the Palisades and West Hollywood right along those Hollywood Hills.

The older folks will take what money they can and leave. They have had their time there, enjoyed the ocean views and the higher standard of living, so its time to take the money and run. I am so fearful that muti-story condos will go up to replace many of these original homes, big lots, trees, and seclusion with great views (already happened in Brentwood). LA's planning dept is so geared up for that type of building due to lack of housing. I hate to see that turn into the "Valley". That wasn't the Valley when I ran around there in my youth. Then there's the mandated low income housing that come along with that type of muti-story construction. Talking about fooking up a nice neighborhood.

I have little interest in helping rebuild out there unless its someone or the house I know. Just this morning, I was at mom's talking with my old neighbor's sister who lives in Altadena. She rounded up four of her neighbors to set up a meeting with me to talk about rebuilding. Three of the neighbors have access to the original plans so that will make getting funding from insurance easier but the permitting process will be a drawn out fight. I might do that due to the fact I have long history of hanging around the Pasadena Foothill area. This is the part of Altadena that had lots of older, mansions, old money. The Greene and Greene I restored nearby years ago burned to the ground. I like to rebuild that again since we had done a lot of research and design on that particular house. Oh yeah, they want those Muti-story condo up there too since parts of that area is zone for R4 which was changed out years ago but due to the historical houses, many of the owner refused to sell. Sad.
You should help rebuild Altadena. You've the skills and sensibilities to build houses that are right for the history of the neighborhood. It would be really sad if Altadena ends up a bunch of T-6 snout houses.

If this should be a new thread, then please do that.

Castaic fire now 5,000 ac, I think started at far NE corner of lake (Lake Hughes Rd/Castaic Reservoir Rd), which puts all of Lake Castaic between the fire and the town of Castaic. Winds from the NE, 13 kts or so. Castaic being evacuated.

Just eyeballing the map, the bigger concern is if fire rounds the lake and turns south, then it will be pointed at Santa Clarita with no lake in the way. However, wind forecast is for winds to change to more from the south in a couple of days. There's not much civilization north of the fire.

Would rebuilding resemble remodel when it comes to property taxes? I'm not an expert in property re-assessment triggers other than I think a remodel needs to stick in a few guidelines to avoid a rebuild situation and resulting re-assessment. Just curious if anyone here can chime in.

"There’s some relief if you're worried about losing your Prop 13 tax base. Under current rules, you can rebuild up to 120% of your original home's value without triggering a reassessment. As a result, you can improve materials or add a bit more space without worrying about taxes going through the roof."

Maybe not the most definitive source but I expect they have it right.

Not a single bit of "disinformation" John, none. All based on observation and decades of experience as a native Californian

Time will prove me "prophetic"

They try to push to remove Prop 13 many times years back and was unsuccessful. Eventually they will nail us and it will go away. The way things are, I am not betting on them staying true to their word on the same tax base. No way, if there's money to be gain for the county or the gov. They will nail us. Once the application of any construction is applied through the city of county, within the year, a letter comes, asking about square footage, or the type of work done. Assessment can be done anytime after that. If these cities want to do us all a solid, reduce the construction permit fees or a simpler remodeling fee. For a whole house remodel, approx 2000 sq' the permit run on average, 7000 bucks. This is not including plan check, but just the permit.

I fear the Palisades will look like Irvine if our governor has his way.

I was repairing our dryer and went back in the kitchen to get some water. Saw a dark blob in the sky and thought we were getting rain.

Turns out it was fire. Grabbed spoons, guitars, computer and file box and me and the Dog hit the road. Wife is in Arizona with the Grandkids. Dang people drive like idiots when they're evacuating. Trying to drive and check their phones for fire updates, no bueno.

Sleeping on a friends couch. Fire is on the other side of 5 freeway and they got a handle on it. Should be able to get back in the morning, fingers crossed.

This weekend rain is forecast. Good. But it may bring mudslides with all the vegetation gone.

From the video I saw, the Castaic fire looks in a pretty good place to be contained, in that it is caught in an area with big open dirt spaces and easy engine access - some sort of industrial zone maybe? - and is getting hit with all the air stuff pulling water from the lake. Fingers crossed!

Evacuation is not fun. We have had to evacuate a few times for hurricanes and we spent the entire time glued to the weather channel. We’ve tried to stay off interstates and on backroads to avoid the crazy evacuation traffic. Hope you’re spared!

I predict that like many who sell their long time owned 911 regret it and then find themselves priced out of another, so will some who decide not to rebuild.

Here's another twist.
The city I live in designated my home as being qualified for the Mills Act to protect historic properties.
As a mid century modern home it has NO attic what so ever, lots of floor to celling glass and all the electric is distributed over the roof instead of through the walls.
One home in our neighbor hood burnt down real quick because of the way it was built, but the city allowed a duplicate home to be built with some material upgrades only.
