David, there are ALWAYS exceptions. Your blogging about your experiences is very uncommon. You have shown us a side of police work that is not prevalent. You are one of a kind. There certainly are many others out of the total police population that deserve recognition for the work they do and how they do it.

You are the exception. My direct and indirect experiences tell a different story. I go on what I see and feel. I stand on my statement as a generalization. I didn't always feel this way. My feelings earned their way into my life as have many others, some good and bad.

Thank you for bringing it up because I thought of you when I made the statement. Now it is complete.

(begin edit) Hate is a careless word. All words of that ilk are not very good words. If I had thought about it I should have used the word "dislike." It's the same thing but carries a different connotation. Let me say that if I encounter police it's their move to show me respect before I do anything or say anything. However, in the few times I have encountered the police they have always been abrupt and determined to bring about an outcome.

It's a methodology.

BAD idea. Got an officer that took the career because he or she has a power tripping problem and you at the very least are in for a lot of hassle.
Humble demeanor and major doses of respect will get you a lot farther.

I don't ever recall getting pulled over in my 930 and not for lack of trying. I've even had a cop see me do something stupid like light up tires and still nothing.

I have been pulled over in the Cayman a few times. In Texas it's usually just a warning but in Mississippi and North Carolina I wasn't so lucky.

I will be one of the nicest people a cop pulls over that day

At another BBS I read there was long going discussion on whether you notify up front. It was about 50/50 whether to notify up front. In TN, we have the ability to carry without a permit and there is no requirement to notify. I feel that it is better to be respectful and notify based on this advice:

"Officer I am licensed to carry and I have it on. Please tell me what you want me to do."
Well worth the dozen minutes to watch.

A good friend of mine is a former Wichita PD officer and SWAT team member, so I spent a lot of time drinking beer with him and his cop buddies. Outside of work they are normal dudes, just like anybody else.

I try to give police some grace, because they have a dangerous and thankless job. Every time they walk up to a car window could be their last, not many of us understand that perspective.

Depends on where you're at. In an uppity neighborhood with euro cars, probably not.

A place with beat up Nissans on every corner, they will crucify and/or lynch you. Police too.

IMO, on the side of the road, I have no power. Most officers I know (or have had to talk with on the side of the road) are decent folks just doing their job. I have had the "pleasure" of dealing with a local officer who had a reputation for being on a power trip. I saw it the moment he stomped up to my window and started screaming at me that he wanted to "haul you azz off to jail" with a bunch of bogus charges. I did a lot of "yes sir" "no sir" "I'm sorry sir" and I guess my groveling fed his minimum daily requirement of power-tripping and after he threatened me he let me go. About year or so later I saw a news article where he tried to intimidate the wrong person, got his pic on the front of the local newsy community magazine and eventually lost his job. It was then I found out how bad he was.

One of my funnier encounters was in my old 2008 Silverado pick up. It was black and murdered out meaning de-badged, black paint, black wheels, black grill, lowered a little and of course tinted windows. I got pulled over by a state trooper in east Texas in an area known for drug running. Two troopers got out of the car and started walking up on either side. I could see the tension in them with both ready to draw at a moment's notice. When I rolled down my window exposing a middle aged white guy with short gray hair I could see their bodies go limp as the tension dissolved

In Texas if you have a CHL, if you are asked to provide your DL like in a traffic stop, I believe you are required to hand over your CHL, or at least strongly advised to. I have been pulled over many times since I got my CHL. I keep my DL and CHL together so I can pull them out at the same time. I had the cop both. They almost always ask if I'm currently carrying. Sometimes they ask what and where. That's generally the extent of it.

Exactly, I don't understand how they do that job. I don't think I could for 100 different reasons.

I try to be the easiest most pleasant person they meet if I get pulled over. Windows down, hands on the wheel, "yes, sir", "no, sir", "thank you, sir" etc.... I don't think I've ever met a bad one, although I'm sure that they are out there. And I'm also sure that it's possible to meet a good one that's having a bad day which might suck, but like I said, I want to me the easiest person they deal with if they have to deal with me.

Racial profiling is a scientific fact. The old excuse of suspecting suspicious activity is almost a trope. Law enforcement pays lip service to training about bias but it is not much more than that.

I got completely taken apart on the side of the Interstate in Louisiana. Same thing, slightly lowered and debadged. White truck with a roll out bed tool box. They had all my tools on the ground.

My choice was to do that there, or do that back at the station after being towed. They had me on a minor equipment violation. So, fully cooperative, and they saw that I was in fact a construction worker traveling to work in another state. I'm sure the CA plates didn't help. Pulled over by 2 cruisers simultaneously. They weren't taking any chances.

They basically said. "Y'all don't come back now." I pulled off the road at the next town and corrected the violation. They were kind enough to give me a day pass to get out but I removed dark lenses over my lights. This was in the early 90's. Never been back to LA and never going.

When coming home I went up through CO. Fk Loseranna.

Good point. When I had my black car de-badged and some things blacked out, I also got tinted windows. The guy who did it said he didn't recommend the darker tint I wanted because it would be a ticket magnet. I went with what was legal in this state and he had some cool stickers which he put on the driver and passenger door glass that said something along the lines of "this is a legal tint" and I keep the bill stating what tint I got in the glove box.

Back in the stone ages when I was a teenager, I did a ride along with two cops to teach them how to photograph the hookers in town at night under low light. I was amazed how ugly those hookers were. Yuck.

Anyway while riding around they told me someday you will be pulled over. Everyone gets pulled over at some point. They said roll the window down, place your hands on top of the steering wheel, never ever make a fast moves and explain any movement, like opening the glove box for the paperwork or reaching for your wallet. Do that slowly and deliberately. Remain calm! And answer all questions with yes sir or no sir. Don't try to initiate small talk. Don't argue about anything. The cop is in charge. Argue in front of a judge at trial if you think it was egregious. No one has evr won an argument on the side of the road with a cop.

It was great advice, and the few tickets I have received back in the 70s it served me well. Like the song, I can't drive 55 and going 70 was a major red flag. It makes me smile as I cruise past a state trooper at 80, the legal limit and I remember a friend was handcuffed for 85 back in the bad old days of the 55 limit.

The only time I have been pulled over in my 996TT the cop said he picked me out of the crowd because I "looked" like I was going fast. He was very nice (it helped that my wife was with me and full of smiles) and praised me for having the car without a single driving infraction on my record.
He still gave me a ticket though. lol

Ive never had a ticket in a Porsche . I got pulled for 72 in a 25 in my 944 Turbo , right when I first moved to this po dunk little town .
It was on a back road in the middle of nowhere . Nothing but cornfields and cows .
It was the chief of police, and that was the beginning of my relationship with the local police . He was amused, but not amused . He said he was just out patrolling and could hear me coming a half mile away and wondered what was making all that whoosh sound. Gave me a warning, and told me next time, I should bring my toothbrush .

Try being black and driving a 911. An old friend, Independent shop owner, was constantly pulled over testing customer cars for decades.

My last ticket was in my 914 back in 1978 I think. Maybe 1979, I don't remember for sure. I was going 50 in a 45 zone, about midnight returning from a photo shoot of a high dollar house's interior.

Anyway there were two cops, and they had me sit in the back seat, and I heard them discussing if they should do a breathalyzer test, and the driver said it was a lot of paperwork, and he does not look drunk. I was just down the road from an infamous strip joint called the Red Dog Saloon. I lived nearby, but I had not been in the Red Dog, I was headed home.

They still wrote me up for 50 in a 45. Of course I had up to date tags, and my insurance and driver's license were all up to date, and no want or warrants, and no tickets on my record, and I was polite to them.

Good grief. While I certainly can't argue against the decent way to behave, just read that over and think about it for a minute.

Man, if anything makes my point about cops, that is it. Should you be an ass? Heck no. Should we expect to submit to a drill sergeant? Rhetorical.
