Maybe someone already asked, but why can't you park your own cars in front of your house?

Some HOAs don't allow it. AZ has countless gated, trailer park or "mobile home" communities where there is never any street parking allowed. My HOA allows it for, I think, three consecutive nights. Rest assured, every HOA has a Karen who waits for someone to break the rule, so they can file a complaint. If you want to claim the street belongs to the City and HOA rules don't apply, ok. Have fun with that whole process. Lots of Youtube videos on that one.

I do, once in a while but I'd rather not. I'm at the end of a circular cul-de-sac; it's a tight turn for larger vehicles to make. Trash trucks and delivery trucks have to make a three point turn to negotiate the circle when cars are parked in the street. I once watched a trash truck slide 20 feet on ice right past my house. I'd rather not risk the damage.

Get off my lawn!

My brother and sister in law came through on a road trip in their class B motorhome. We took them to dinner at a favorite Mexican restaurant they love, and they spent the night parked in front of our house. I ran an electrical cord to their motorhome so they did not have to run the generator to run the fridge and such. They spent the night in our house and had a real shower in the morning.
It was for one night, and I talked to the HOA president and he said that is fine for one night. It was different for the neighbors as our entire street is free of cars the vast majority of the time.

My neighbors there would have just run that stuff over or tossed it over the fence. It wasn't the best neighborhood in town.
At my current house (cul de sac), I'm the guy that parks in the street. That, or they get to hear the backup alarm at 5am. I think that would be worse. Regardless, our HOA has no teeth. In the middle of the cul de sac is a grassy circle with an oak tree. Neighbor's grown kids like to drive across it and rut it up. I'm usually the one that fixes the ruts. Fortunately, it's not that often now that they're grown an moved out. Every place has it's challenges. And I have to remind myself that these are first world problems... People are viscious in Boston when it comes taking snow spots. I've seen plenty of flat tires while driving around over the years.

Not yours
the street is not yours, you should talk to him but he can park anywhere he can in the street in front of your house or others.

It can get tricky. Usually the HOA has bylaws which attach to the deed and automatically convey with a sale. These prevent owners from doing wild things which affect the neighborhood and maintain minimum standards. [Karen has entered chat] It also prevents new owners from 'leaving the HOA' (ie not paying for community services) that their neighbors pay for. They also make the individual homeowner responsible for some common elements, such as clearing sidewalks and mowing parkways, just like the city. The HOA typically owns the common spaces but will deed the roads inside to the city because it's too expensive to pave and plow snow. IDK about the sewer system underneath either. Thus your street might be either. If there's an entrance gate for the community the HOA usually owns the street and utilizes it's own private contractors instead of city services. https://www.hoaleader.com/public/What-You-Need-Know-About-Public-Association-Controlled-Streets.cfm Jeff Vollmer, a partner at Makower Abbate Guerra Wegner Vollmer PLLC, whose firm advises nearly 2,000 association clients throughout Michigan, has clients that have private roads that are common elements and clients whose roads are owned by the local government. "Sometimes, the streets are deeded to the municipality," he adds. "On the plat, there will be a reflection that the roads are publicly dedicated."

Do you have a relationship with this neighbor besides the car problem?
Kinda late in the thread to start there I guess. I like this thread because it makes me really love my street

As far as him and his girlfriend parking their cars in front of my house - true, it's public parking. What sucks is their empty driveways and leaking oil. I'm just not set up that way and have far more consideration for my neighbors. We'll see if he actually moves his car as he said he would.

Tell him you need the vehicles moved, you're ordering building materials that will be offloaded in front of your house.
The drop 2 of these and fill with your garden hose... https://www.uline.com/BL_568/Traffic-Barriers?keywords=parking+barrier

So this morning I happened to go into the kitchen after being on the computer for a while and low and behold there's a M-B parked in my driveway!
I go out and move the trash cans that are at the curb waiting to be picked up, to behind the car so it can't leave without me knowing about it. I decide to wait instead of going back inside the house. About 5 minutes go by and the owner comes out from a house across the street. I told him I'll let him leave as soon as he pays me $25 for the parking space. At first he didn't want to, but then he decided it'd be better to just pay and go. The nerve of some people thinking they can just park anywhere because they don't want to walk from around the corner due to no parking available on the street. I like to think I'm a nice guy but I'm not when it comes to this problem. Our city is going to crap because of all the ADU's being built in what was a single family residential neighborhood.

I worry when someone turns around in my driveway. The people across the street were doing that one time and jumped the curb that's between my driveway and my neighbors. Hit the gas hard enough that their car ended up HITTING my neighbors garage and taking out a wall of it along with the garage door. The garage is a good 16' from the street too.
My wife would freak if she found out what I did this morning. I think she lives in fear of the neighbors as we're the minority around these parts. She's never interacted with any of them to my knowledge and we've been here since '85.
