Blizzard today

At 6am, supposed to snow all day for close to 2 feet south of Boston, wind was ferocious. Highways not plowed yet (exit off 93 was the first plowing I saw... the two cars stuck ahead were not happy campers but neither should have been out and about), carefully driven, the Cayenne was unstoppable, even in a foot of fresh snow hooliganing in the supermarket parking lot. Fond memories of living in Minnesota in the 70s-80s.

Glad we don't have to deal with that . Be safe out there . When living in NY I quickly learned 4x4 does not make you invincible

OK, here's a labor law question:

My wife's office has closed for the day. She has been told she must work from home. Salaried employees that don't/can't/won't work from home have been told they must take a PTO day. Is that legal? We have power (generator kicked in about 6 am), but no internet. Or does she just zoom from her phone all day?

They are great for moving way south and playing in wimpy southern snow storms

I don’t have a legal answer for you, but the city I worked for had a rule that salaried employees who took the whole day off had to use PTO, but if you worked even a little that day it was considered a work day. I would tell her to do a few things, make a few calls, send some emails etc. and call it a workday.

Getting absolutely hammered here on the south shore of NYC. 50 mph sustained winds, 3-5 foot drifts, should be 20" total accumulation. I'm dreading going out to use the snowblower.

My daughter was in Boston for the weekend for a training seminar. Her return flight yesterday was cancelled and she didn't make the cut for standby, so she rented a car and drove back to PHL starting mid morning. It took her 5 hours - she reported clear wet roads and light traffic.

We probably had 8"-10" north of Philadelphia per the weather - drifts were well over a foot. Slow going with the snowblower as it was wet and sticky but I got the driveway and walks cleared. Oddly, our road was plowed by dawn - we are usually last on the list. That meant I got to deal with about 3' of plow pile. Fortunately, the snow blower chewed right through it.

4WD pickup with Duratracs had no problem. Roads ranged from nearly clean to unplowed. Very little traffic out - mostly pickups and plows. No one in the ditches so that was nice.

The usual diehards made it to the office. I saw a Camry, a Sentra and a Lexus sedan in the parking lot, so it couldn't have been to bad.

and document everything she does. BTDT

Here in NWNJ the total isn't final and drifting makes it hard to tell but it looks like a solid foot so far. And moderately heavy. I'm shoveling in small bites. No more than a 1/3rd of a shovel full. To quote Vash "I'm so tired"

Those pics are a pretty normal random day from December through March here.

Winters make me wonder what it was like for native peoples without the internets and stuff.

On the work question, have her do a little work.

Maybe spend most of the day planning, making strategy and other non-interactive items. But do send an email and make a call to document that she worked.

What a crappy company. They deserve the low productivity they get today.

That does not look like fun. Take it easy on yourself while shovelling that.

We have that gusty wind here also....but no snow.
From inside, it looks nice and sunny.....go out and that north wind is bone chilling cold.

Wow. I haven’t seen anything like that since the Blizzard of ‘78. People still talk about it. Stay home and stay safe, keep in touch with neighbors, loved ones, and help out if you can.

We've had our share of 3 footers. Back in 2021 It was IIRC near 35 inches. My WAG is we've had maybe 5 or 6 since the late 90's. It sux.

I was working a farm delivery service during that blizzard of 78. Most everything was closed...except businesses like ours. Cows don't change for a storm.

We made our reg calls for each day....had to shovel our truck out of snow drifts numerous times. It wasn't fun.
