I was under the impression that leaving the field of play, returning to it and then being first to touch the ball was a penalty. If so, why was the Oregon player recovering the drop not caught on replay?

He went out of bounds in the end zone, then re-entered and recovered the fumble.
Is the end zone considered "field of play?" An offensive player cannot do this, as you stated, and be the 1st player to touch the ball. I'm also confused. Great observation. Did the ref screw the pooch with the stupidity and excitement of the play?

KICKING TEAM PLAYER VOLUNTARILY OUT OF BOUNDS
Article 4 During a punt that crosses the line of scrimmage, and prior to a change of possession, it is a foul if a kicking team player goes out of bounds voluntarily (without being contacted) prior to the end of the kick. Penalty: Loss of five yards. I can't find a reference to this rule other than on a kick...
