I've had that situation before. I had an alternator go out once while driving from Tampa to Orlando in a Dodge Omni with a 1.7L VW motor. The last bit of the drive, the car wasn't firing, and I assume was dumping unburned gas into the exhaust that was burning in the cat. When I finally stopped, the cat was bright red.
