I drove my friends skyline once - it was ok but had the tiptronic/automatic/sequential gearbox (you can choose any of the 3) which I didn't really like. Also it felt big and heavy - and like many modern cars the electronics and sound proofing made me feel too removed from the car (I was probably going a lot faster than it felt). It's a beautiful engine though - straight sixes are so smooth).
He's trading in his Evo VI for a Type R33 Skyline GTR soon (manual and with more rawness) so maybe I'll be able to give you another opinion). They're not too expensive in the UK - about the same as an average 1980's Carrera. Last edited by smarjoram; 03-01-2004 at 02:19 AM.. |

yep that's a Skyline and yep they're all right hand drive. In stock form they have about 330HP it is said. There are people who take them up to 800HP. I don't think a modded 930 can compeat with that. Only 993 GT2's with 700+HP would I expect to be up there in performance.

rhd... must be a Jap import !!
See a few around here in th UK, but definitely not a common car. A sophisticated bit of machinery (more like electronics)....... .... doesn't four wheel steering and viscous coupling kick in when it senses the car going fast into a tight corner ??? Mad !

hi all,
im a gtr owner and a porsche 930 owner, ive owned 2 of the models in the photo, r34gtr. you really have to jump into atleast a 993tt to compare peformance, 600hp is a piece of cake for around $6kus. nissan make a gtt and a gtr, gtt is single turbo 2.5 and the would have to be a seriously modified 930 to get close to a modded gtr. i love my porsche, but if i want to go really fast i jump in the gtr. |

Yep... the Skyline is near legendary. Very rare in North America, very fast stock... and scary fast when modified. The Skyline may possibly be the fastest production car the Japanese have ever produced.
Incidentally, there is a video somewhere on the web, shot in a brightly lit highway tunnel in Japan, of a Skyline exceeding 200mph. -MAS

Bear in mind Exvitermini in Japan did a 0-180mph run (0-300km/h) in only 13 seconds.

Here you go. This GTR with mods runs 3.0 0 - 60. The one I drove had similar performance as the guy had spent $$$ on it after he bought it and felt faster than any street car I had driven.
http://www.supercars.net/cars/1999@$Nissan%20Blitz@$Skyline%20GT-R%20R348g.html Here is a list of fastest 0 - 60s, not sure of accuracy, but interesting There are some Porsches in there, but they pick up around 3.3. http://www.supercars.net/index-sixty.html

Those cars are sweet! I don't care if it's a "jap car" or not. They put a lot of time and money developing that car and it shows. Not only does it "move" in a straight line, but it will out handle a boat load of cars as well. Now I bet i would give it a run for it's money with the viper in my garage, but it would eat me in the twisties. Actually maybe not if it does 0-60 in 3.0 seconds. That is damn fast!. Viper does it in 3.2

Would a stock Skyline be considered a ricer? Seems quite real to me.

Some folks here are really confused. Calling a Skyline "jap crap" or "ricer" is like calling all Porsches 'Volkswagens' (which nearly every Corvette driver seems to need to do within earshot).
It's excusable in a child, but some of you guys really need to get your heads out of your little Porsche world... http://www.suninternational-usa.com/

I am just as anti Japanese as you guys generally tend to be. I also think the Skyline is ugly and or looks dated. I, however, have complete respect for the car and its performance. It is definitely cutting edge in all respects.

It's the imported Right-seater Skyline GTR. MotoRex in Torrance, CA imports them and federalized them for sale in the U.S. The brand new one cost $90,000(landed in the U.S.). It the comparable car as Carrera4 in Japan.

Sorry, that's just a mean looking car, kick me out of the club if you want to.
I don't care if it's a soul-less appliance for speed, I'd take it, they say the same thing about the 996 TT. Now for 90K on the other hand.....

Last I checked...the 993TT isn't the only Porsche turbo capable of 700+ horsepower. Drop 700Hp into a 78 or 79 930...bring on the skyline!

That site I posted to the fastest cars 0 - 60 had the Porsche Gambella Extreme and several other Porsches that were souped up. They were like 3.4 0 - 60 as opposed to the 3.0 posted by the souped up Skyline. Not sure a 79 with 700 hp would have enough traction to run 3.0 unless it had big slicks. The Skyline though had 800 + hp. I would still rather have my TT than a souped up Sky Line.

If 0-60 is the bechmark then head out to any local dragstrip and watch an old $20,000 tubbed big block Camero on the juice eat your lunch.
ANYTHING is fast if you throw enough boost at it. Doing it on the cheap is where the respect comes in. At $100,000 this ain't no bargain. And it's ugly too.

Less than $10 K away... you forgot to add in the original purchase price. The early 930's make a very cost effective performance platform.
Not too sure if wheelspin is a real or perceived issue...with limited slip the early 930's are real sleepers in the 0-60 race. There certainly is one thing you can say about the skyline...there is no mistaking it for a Nissan. Rick '78 930 |
