Steve.....I think the person who removed the male inflorescences in this case, did so to avoid the untidy appearance after the blooms die off. I say that because I know who he is and a little about his situation. I mean look at the yard...rock...rock...rock...sagos...sagos...sagos. ....how basic can you get?

I was working next door and saw the pile of male blooms and thought it would make an interesting pic.

That said - there is something to what you said about diverting the energy from blooming to maintain growth, but on a sago it's probably moot.

OK, was just curious. I'd never seen anyone do that before and there are a bunch of those around here.

I actually love the male flowers on the king sago much better than the fruiting bodies of the females (no jokes, please).

I think they are very ornamental.

But nothing I see surprises me any more....including bizarre pruning rituals...

We installed some Bamboo yesterday for a new project. This morning I set up temporary watering until I can get the permanent irrigation in next week. Bamboo uses a LOT of water and it's important to keep their feet wet - especially when first planted.

This is an easy system to set up - funny pipe with adapter to garden hose which is connected to battery timer on hose bib. Adjustable bubblers screwed into tee fittings with barbs on both ends and a 1/2" nipple on the tee. This coil of bubblers has been used on at least 3 other jobs that I can think of in the past 10 years or so....the last one was for newly installed Cabbage Palms. Save s a lot of hand watering!

I mostly just mowed over it regularly and that kind of kept it in check, but it kept trying anyway.

Yes....this is clumping, Steve. It's all I use. This variety is my favourite...Bambusa textilis 'Gracilis'...very compact footprint and vertical growth. In a couple years you won't see that house next door. ;)

masraum 05-28-2016 05:26 PM

Nice, I love Bamboo, but you definitely either need clumping or a very serious plan to keep it in check. Mother nature finds a way.
