Exactly correct. I like challenging the software logic and sensors of my old Iphone. I had my buddy walk along as I panned and got ridiculous results. We were up near yet another volcano (Mt. Baker) for an overnight trip. The joy of free camping still exists in a few places in the North Cascades. This spot has an amazing view even with the smoke from wild fires up in BC and here in Washington intruding. This site you can boat/canoe/Kayak or walk to- first come, first serve. We lucked out and got the premier camp site since the family that camped there Thursday night were just packing up and leaving. Site of the Wellington Train disaster 1910, concrete snow sheds were built to avoid another one... then a re-route and very long tunnel was built. You can still wander through the old snow shed up at Steven's Pass. To my knowledge, Wellington to this day is the largest train disaster loss in the USA.
Yrs ago, I hiked down the slope to the wreck and grabbed a few pieces of rusty metal. Wellington site is still there but only foundations are present. To go to site you have to drive down the old road from the top of the pass, the lower road was washed out by a flood yrs ago. |
Actually there is access for the lower end at MP 58.3 on Highway 2, nice parking area and an honest to Hoyle Caboose.
The trail has a fork in it, righteous one goes up and up and catches the RR bed near one of tunnels, most are in some state of collapse (like many of us) and yer not supposed to go in. Rules... A chunk follows a huge wall for a long distance, long enough to appreciate the tough buggers that blasted and built with liquid rock. No affiliation I tell ya. Quite a slice of history and only about 90 minutes from where I live. There are some crazy cool stuff here in the PNW within 5 hours drive time... desert, rain forest, mountains, lakes, rivers, the ocean, the Salish Sea... Tough part for me at times is just figuring out what to go do next. |

I spent a lot of time in that area getting a UAS services business started. I loved it. I rented Jeeps mostly and would take Forest Service Roads all over the area from Leavenworth through Plain to Telma and beyond. NF-6700 was a favorite of mine from Lake Wenatchee around Mt. Howard to Rte 2. I really fell for the area, especially the eastern side of the passes. I ran thousands of miles on ranch road all over the State. Hope to be back soon! I liked to fly out of Spokane when it made sense. I'd stay at Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Spokane City Center next to the Spokane River. I love that area. In about 3 years, we are going to start living in Seattle part time. We still have a home there in Wedgwood. I would like to own property in the area where you took these photos, somewhere around Skykomish. My wife wants a place on the islands. We'll see who wins. :D
EDIT: opps, didn't see that you already mentioned the accident. The Great Northern rail disaster that took place on that line is worth mention. Still the worst rails disaster in US history.
