You live in the best part of this or any other world.

Very cool.

Thanks. Problem is that the owners are trying to get rid of the old stuff but it's really only worth it as scrap metal. The crawler is a 1953 model and hasn't run in years from what I've been told. Has a gas pony engine you start first then start the diesel.

Here's another one, bad clutch. Also been parked for years

you would be surprised how much those old pieces are worth for the parts alone...........

There is quite the collector interest in old unusual farm equipment. Must be an online connection for it.

Paul, I find it puzzeling that you show us great pics of your place and surround ares, yet seem totally over it and just looking for a way out. What gives?

Cheers Richard

I grew up in the Coastal Mountains outside of Thousand Oaks/Newbury Park...in my opinion, the best mix of terrain and weather on this planet.

I enjoy my farm, love it 8 months out of the year; true four seasons is terrific. It is a remarkable place.

That said: take June, July and August and get me the F out of here.

We'll figure out the future when the time is right. Until then, I'll keep walking. I have some more pics for tomorrow.

three best months of the year at my farm, but BOY and I glad when orchard chores are finally done long about mid September........ actually later this past year.

My brother and I, inherited a caterpillar road grader from our father... It also uses a pony motor.. Worth scrap metal price...sure, but some day we thought it might be fun to get it going again... It would be quite useful on the old home place keeping the roads around the property open.

Man, I hear you there Paul.
It's pretty hot and very muggy in the summer down here too.
I'm hoping to acclimate to it. May be dreaming.

How is it at elevation in the Carolinas or West Virginia in the summer?
I may have to find someplace cooler for summer myself.

Nice looking old barn there Bill!

Cheers Richard

Great to see that old equipment not rusted into flakes. I've been around antique farm tractors for decades and I cannot ID that tractor. It's from the 1950s for sure, but the chicken roost steering, that handbrake on the right, cultivator mount bosses on the front - none of it matches up with anything I am familiar with, which drives me nuts. Do you have any side view photos of it?

If you are talking about this International TD-6, it doesn't have a pony motor. It has International's direct start on gas/switch to diesel engine from the early '40s. I looked for other crawler pics and didn't see any, but I may be looking at a photo you were not referring to.
These TD-6s are fairly collectible, especially here in the midwest where relatively few of them were sold.

Lat Barn Pics - I promise

The last pictures of barns on my morning route!

Young couple bought an old farm house near me and are i the process of refurbishing the house. They put in a goat barn and raise goats for show and for the market.

You can see how wet it has been!

I'd like to try and get it running again. Makes it worth more than scrap metal. If my son the former Caterpillar mechanic lived closer I could get him to help.

A you said, it's a 1953 model TD-6. 248 ci 4 cylinder gas/diesel engine. Guys I know who have them say the weakest link to getting it started is the gas-side ignition. If it's been sitting it will need the usual gas line and carburetor clean out in addition to getting the ignition working. I don't know if they still used a magneto in 1953 or not. All the gas versions of the tractor (T-6) had switched to distributor ignition by then. Once you get the gas side running to do the usual diesel stuff, drain and clean the tank and lines, change the filters, bleed the air out etc.

Here is a video of a guy starting one. It fires up on gasoline and once it's warmed up the pulls a lever that closes the valve to the gasoline combustion chamber - instantly raises the compression ratio from 5 or so to 16:1 - and the diesel fires up. Kinda cool.

THey have a manual for it here at Jensales.

Thanks. I believe the manual is in the shop there. My son used to be a Caterpillar diesel mechanic, he may be able to get it going again. Unfortunately he's living on the east coast

You might google the International Harvester Collectors Club to see if there is anyone out there who would want to help. These engines are unique and the guys who know about them are pretty proud about it. Someone retired old guy in the IHC club might volunteer to help.

Gretch 12-31-2018 01:35 PM

If I had that on my farm, I would not sleep until I had it running. I LOVE old hard working diesel gear!
