Looks like Christmas is just around the corner at the Home Depot in Hilton head today. 🙄

The new section of the SF bay bridge looks a lot like that. (I didn't take this picture).

Strong Aurora Boreas forecast for last Saturday night, so up north about an hour and a half to Baker Lake area I went.
Snagged a free camping site closest to the boat launch and great NE view prescribed for such happenings.

Along with 20 or so other like minded peeps, kids and at least one dog watched and waited from sunset to about 9 pm when word circulated the light show forecast shifted to midnight, I saw nary a trace of the lights by eye or full frame camera and then fog formed and ended the show.

I crawled into one 20 degree rated bag, unzipped and tossed another over me.
Stayed just warm enough overnight with a 3.5" REI Basecamp inflatable mattress. Getting soft in my old age!

Ah well, good practice and I did some exploring and found better camping options up lake.

We visited the Auschwitz concentration/death camp in southern Poland this past month. It is hard to describe just how horrible this place and what it represents is.

i went in 2012.

It was weird, it was spring
the town near by was a bit grim, dull, not nice looking

but when we came to the camp, it was immaculately kept, the lawn the trees, all were perfectly green and nice looking, and it was an odd contrast that i caught myself thinking "this is a nice looking place" And then the horros of that place were revealed as i went a long

I remember myself standing at the window where they showed posessions of people there.
a window with nothing but womens shoes
a window with nothing but glasses
etc etc
clenched fists. feeling angry to my core.

It should be mandatory to visit that place before taking elected office at national level.

I thought I had a Bur Oak, but it turns out it's just a white oak. I'm not complaining either way.

Wailau Valley

In the '60s, we boys would be dropped off at Wailau for the weekend by our fishermen dads. We'd bodysurf, fish, explore the valley, and battle mosquitos for a couple days, then get picked up mid-day Sunday for the gut-churning return to Oahu. Good times ..
