^Very nice Bugs, very nice!^ Washington state has the 2nd largest ferry system on this planet... Istanbul is bigger based on peeps floated hither and yawn. The San Juan Islands are only a couple hours away including the hour plus ferry ride. I've only been out to them 3 times in the last 50 years for some odd reason... I/we go to Whidbey Island several times a year, it's an easy and scenic drive over Deception Pass, so we do. It's been on my rolling list of destinations for ever, wife and I decided it would be a good option for a couple night 35 year wingding celebration. It was, albeit cold and windy the first day, less so the 2nd. Stayed just above Friday Harbor blocks from the ferry dock in a small complex. The mighty Yakama- that native word apparently means a number of things Vessel Information Class: Super Type: Auto/Passenger Ferry Length: 382' 2" Engines: 4 Beam: 73' 2" Horsepower: 8,000 Draft: 18' 6" Speed in Knots: 17 Max Passengers: 2000 Propulsion: DIESEL-ELECTRIC (DC) Max Vehicles: 144 Displacement (weight in long tons): 3634 Tall Deck Space: 30 City Built: San Diego, CA Auto Deck Clearance: 15' 6" Year Built / Re-built: 1967 / 2000 Meaning of Yakima: From the Yakama language, "Yakima" has many meanings: "to become peopled; black bears; runaway; and/or people of the narrow river." A city, county and river are also named after the English spelling of the tribe, Yakima. View from the digs Cattle Point lighthouse Such a trooper! Next day, same beach at 5 pm we were down a layer or so and no wind- a good 3 miles of beach one way, can't get to the lighthouse unless you ascend the bluff South Beach Fox chasing hundreds and hundreds of rabbits- neither are native to the islands, Foxes were brought to help control the rabbit explosion Lime Kiln Lighthouse San Juan's are quit a bit dryer than the mainland-evidence of that phenomenon

More San Juan wanderings British blockhouse circa 1860. For over a decade the sovereignty was in question for this island, Brits and US had forces encamped. Nothing remains of the American Redoubt except the site. The near kerfuffle called the Pig war was over a pig that came on to an Americans farm and rooted up his garden, repeatedly. The pig got shot and that sparked the whole "well who owns this island" debate, poorly handled by both sides. Ultimately the question went to an international tribunal where it was decided where the dividing line ran through the multitude of islands was/is. Roche Harbor area, North end of the island Hotel De Haro circa 1886, the lobby is amazing... have not seen the rooms Back to South end for a good long walk after the wind subsided
