Amazing stuff JP. Oh forget it, I typed like 5 sentences following the first and systematically erased them all. I cannot say anything else, amazing.

this is not even close to JP's drama, but it's pretty good.
my friend is riding in the jump seats of an 11 ton FD engine. The rig is heading downhill in a major city approaching an intersection packed with cars at a red light. The brakes fail on the downhill and the rig is gonna kill a bunch of people in a couple of seconds. The chauffer does a hard left into a side street and almost flips the rig as it takes down a pole at the corner while the rig is in a bit of oversteer. Now the rig is aimed at the opposite side of the street at who knows what speed. The rig takes down an electric pole and crashes head on into a parked SUV. The SUV explodes as they both slow to a stop. The fire engulfs the front 3/4 of the cab and stray flames are kissing the guys getting out the jumpseats. The officer is slightly toasted. The chauffer gets out clean. The chauffer puts the pump in gear before leaving his seat. They put the fire out then stop for a second to see the hot electric wires draped all over the rig. No serious injuries and nobody killed.

JP, Thanks for sharing that. I am going through it w/ my Dad right now, he has throat cancer and it is technically in remission but the poor guy hasn't had a bite of food in ~1 year. He is a retired judge, mandatory retirement @ age 70, 6 months later this happens just when the fun was supposed to start. Oh well. Life is funny, but it absolutely must be lived. My Dad has already told me that he is completely satisfied w/ the experience that he has had here on earth, but that he could obviously do w/o this last bit. Here he was in Rio D.J. 20 years ago visiting my bro who was an exchange student there for a year: Thanks again for sharing that.

Denis -
My dad told us Dec. 28 of '87 he had throat cancer (the day after my sister's b'day and 5 months after he'd retired after 24 years in the Secret Service). Throat cancer wasn't what killed him 5 months later, however. By the spring of '88 chemotherapy had killed the throat cancer, but by that point the soft tissue cancer had metastasized into bone cancer. At that point, it's pretty much a matter of time. And not a lot of time in my dad's case. God bless your father. Enjoy the time you've got with him. I apologize for what probably amounts to a hijack of this thread, which was probably intended to be a visual catalog of purely automotive carnage. However, now when I see a severely injured automobile, I think "some ordinary person was likely grievously injured, w/o warning. I've been through that....I wonder how they're doing." JP

my best friend's father died from throat cancer. I watched him wither away for about six months. (lived in the house next door and looked after him a lot when my friend needed to go to work) the worst thing for us was having to put him into the cabulance that took him to the hospice, as we all knew that he would not be coming back. we visited every day and sat in vigil for weeks. one day I decided that I simply couldn't take it any more and needed a break, so I didn't visit. that was the day that fate chose him to die. it left me feeling very selfish to not have been there for him. my friend told me it was his father's way of sparing me the pain. I took it to heart, but it still stays with me to this day
my heart goes out to both of you

JP,
That's a truely amazing story. I understand how you feel about your dad, I see it everyday with my girlfriend who lost her father almost two months ago. He was just over 50. She had got back from college only 2 weeks earlier before he passed awaywith her at his side. I was a week from taking a trip up to see him. Heck some of you may have seen/talked to him at hershey last year.
