Author Hunter S. Thompson kills himself Associated Press ASPEN, Colo. - Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counterculture writer who popularized a new form of journalism in books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67. "Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News. Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday. Juan Thompson found his father's body. Thompson's wife, Anita, was not home at the time. Besides the 1972 drug-hazed classic about Thompson's time in Las Vegas, he is credited with pioneering "gonzo journalism," purposefully slanted writing full of the writer's opinions. Other books include "Hell's Angels" and "The Proud Highway." His most recent effort was "Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and The Downward Spiral of Dumbness." |

go figure? i thought SS would have posted a more holiday relevent sort of "feel good" story. you know possibly a new take on a preidential assasionation from years past, a story of a poor young mexican boy expiring whilest trying to cross the border in dead of night, or a 15 car pile up on a rainy west coast freeway.
way to go out of charcter with the "death of a pop ican by his own hand" cut and paste! just when i think i've got you figured steve you go and come out of right field with an whole new way to brighten our lives.

 Remember when he ran for sheriff in Aspen(1969) - with the "Freak Power Party" - two of his platform promises: 1. rename Aspen as FatCity 2. replace the pavement with sod. He narrowly missed winning that election. I had the opportunity to meet HST when he did a speaking engagement at UGA 20+ years ago. As I went up front after he was finished, he was pouring one of the largest single drinks I have ever seen a man consume (a very tall tumbler nearly full of Wild Turkey with just a "hint" of some kind of cola). I had a football with me at the time and he, one of my buddies, and I ended up tossing it around the auditorium for awhile. Got him to sign it and still have it here on the shelf.
The Proud Highway was the last thing I read of his. Normally, I wouldn't like to read a collection of someone's correspondence, but much of it was pretty entertaining.

I have the first editions of every book of his that came out since I became interested in writing (around 1996 or so)... basically BETTER THAN SEX on.
Haven't cracked HEY RUBE yet, but I think I read most of it on ESPN.com over the years. I'm wondering if any of his contemporaries - Vonnegut, Wolfe, O'Rourke - will write a memorium?
