From what I have seen, my money would be on a good low miles 328gts or 348ts as a first Ferrari. You can always move up from there to the 12 cylinder club if you have the staying power.

My buddy has an 88 1/2 TR in black. It has 14K on it. He just dropped the engine and did the service himself. He does have a lift. I helped with some of it. The most expensive thing was the $400 manual. He just bought a set of HRE wheels and now it looks like a different car. The stock wheel are horrible. The car has small brakes on it which becomes evident after some spirited driving. He paid around $61K for his about 7 months ago. It is a blast to drive and nothing sounds like the 12 cylinder when you are on it. Would I buy one? NO, I will stick with my 930.

Like somebody else said, what kid didn't have a Testarossa up on the wall in the 80's? At the time, it was one of the ultimate dream cars. Even if I could afford to have somebody else work on my car, as long as I have the time I will always DIY, just for the fun of it, and so I know it's done right (or at least wrong in the right way).

Hmm interesting thread....

It too has crossed my mind that these TR's are at bargain basement prices (for a Ferrari).

Obviously I DO NOT have that kind of cash.

That said, it is an interesting car to look at and I am sure a great conversation piece at that.

It falls into my category of disposable funds for a fairly wealthy person.

I didnt see that girl at the USGP, probably because I was so P--issed. But FWIW, I would also look for a 512 BBi. Better car all around. Also, a 348 or 355 is a good buy to get into the F-world. Good luck.

"The car has small brakes on it which becomes evident after some spirited driving"

Everything's relative I guess. The rear brakes on a TR use 930 turbo brake pads. The 348 GTB uses 930 pads all the way around.

how about a 355? dead cheap, proper sounding v8 and i would think a bit more enjoyable to drive, being a more modern car.

You can, for about 1,800 US. The third brake light needs to go.

I'd rather have a 348, it's even cheaper, although I know I'll be lacking that 12-cyl sound.

TRs are just so grotesque.

The older Ferarri's are definitely tough on repairs. Any 80s car w/ low mileage will not be very reliable....bcz it sat in a garage all it's life. Our 328 was a PITA bcz it sat for so long.

My father has had a 328, 348, and now has a 355. If I were you, I would go for a well maintained 348 for similar money. Or even an early 355B.....

Also, make sure the major service has been done. If not, it'll cost you a good $4K-$5K.

Good Luck
