Val's is still there. Fantastic! The old ladies with the beehive doos are still there, too.

Anybody try Sliders on Polk street in SF?

Not only is it good, the manager is so hot!

I thought this was about Sandy Berger. How many White Castles do you think he could stuff down his pants if Bill told him to?

If you smush 'em, he could get 5 in each sock.

If he's wearing his Depends that day, may 3 or 4 more in his pants. No Depends, probably 10 or more.

years ago on my first WC order, I picked up a ton of cheeseburgers and one fish and one chicken thing just to try them out.

I finished one and said, "mmm, that was a pretty good fish thing." then I bit into the other one, the real fish thing, which, coincidentally on topic, could have spent some time in Berger's socks. YUCK!

Someone way back posted JUNGLE STYLE..

What's that one?

Other than a bunch of one-off Mom&Pop's I've lucked on to in the past, the InNOut is the best burger. Fuddrucker's is very good, but there aren't very many around. I used to like Wendy's but they've gone downhill lately.

My parents plan their California RV travel routes to maximize availability of InNOut restaurants. It's what a burger is all about.

There's a "Red Robin" chain in the Northwest...the burgers are great, but the prepackaged "scene" isn't...too damned noisy, tries too hard to produce an "atmosphere"...

I'm not crazy about any of those choices in the poll. Here are some I do like.

C.F Penns hamburgers - oldest local joint, supposed to be Elvis' favorite hamburger

In N' Out, Animal style - used to get one of these on the way home after every driving event. I also miss the In N Out Burger bumper stickers where they used to cut out the "b" and "r" in burger. Wish we had them in Alabama(the burgers, not the bumper stickers).

Steak N Shake - decent burgers
Backyard Burger - pretty good also

If you go to White Castle, have access to a bathroom about a 1/2 hour later....

Ever get a burger at Wendy's, MCD's or BK that actually looked like the pictures?

Arby's roast beef was really good many years ago until they began selling pressed beef instead of the real thing.

Carls' Jr.'s burgers always tasted charred and burnt.

Sooo...if there isn't a local independent joint that really cares about serving a good burger, you are better off making your own.

In & Out, double double animal style. Had a 4x4 once too, 4 meat, 4 cheese

They use to hand out bumper stickers that said "In & Out Burger, of course, we would change them to say "In & Out urge"

In N Out (Double Double, Animal Style)--by far the best chain burger. Too bad they're only in California (& a couple in Nevada).

Tommy's is also very, very good.

But my all-time-fave (no contest) has got to be Carney's (either on Ventura Blvd or the Sunset Strip). Endorsed by car-guy Jay Leno, too. Double chili cheese burger with chili cheese fries. Yum.
