That's an interesting dilemma. Is majority rule moral?

Often, the majority supports less-than-moral positions.

fastpat - For the good of the country, all criminal Northerners must go. Or cut-and-paste a patch for the boat. Either one.

Superman - for the max benefit to the world, everyone not as smart as him must go. (thus leaving only one person in the boat).

coolchick - start some debates to pass the time, in short order half the passengers will jump overboard voluntarily choosing death's sweet release.

What's the reasoning on married men having a precedence over over unmarried men? Is this assuming that the unmarried man is a the breadwinner or something?
The way I see it, married men got lucky in love and the unmarried ones haven't had the chance yet.

Plan B - row back to the iceberg and get on it.

Pretty nonsensical. Especially if the married man was a wife batterer or pedophile and the unmarried man a philanthropist or volunteer.

No, there is no moral superiority expressed by marital state, race or gender.

I don't think moral value is expressed in any quantifiable way. Only in qualifiable ways.

That's why I suggested the cop-out of unanimous choice of selection method, with volunteer substitutions.

Of course, I suppose everybody could jump overboard and let God decide.

How would such a situation really turn out? Most likely everyone would drown because no one would have the cohones to try to save themselves over everyone else.

If someone did have the cohones, the strongest and most fit would survive, along with anyone they deemed worthy of saving.

All these arguments are valid if you’re setting up a society. Your not. You have to have the thought that help is on the way and at some point you will be saved. Without that thought pattern you end up developing a social model that will take generations to sort out - it ain't happening. Even if some of you survive the guilt and remorse you will have will be worse then death.

Say you start throwing the fatties, the old and the hurt over the side. And even some folks who are plenty healthy decide to give up the ghost (which will never happen BTW) take a powder and expire. And then the unthinkable happens...you get saved. You just sent a bunch of folks to their deaths because in your infinite wisdom you played God. Nice going! Thanks for killing my Grampy and fat Uncle Ned!

all the more reason to keep as many on board as possible. At some point, the hot chick will have to pee and then you get to watch!

eazy moral choice throw the christians overboard
first they THINK they are SAVED
and you get rid of the fools who belive fairytales
who therefor are not rational anyway or usefull
and are likely to be neo-conned too
so it's a WIN WIN

BTW if in iceberg waters people in the water DIE quickly
and the more in the boat the more to bale out the water
and the warmer everyone will stay

why not just climb up on the iceburg and hang there until somebody arrives. You can go weeks without food and the ice would provide plenty of slushies in case you get thirsty!

The South side of the burg can be the conservative Baptists (always keeping a vigil eye out for intruders from the southern tip), the Northern side of the burg can be your democratic liberals, the west side can be where all the fruits and nuts hang out the middle can be where all the folks without accents and have a fair degree of tolerence will be.

I was trying to avoid creating more orphans in the world. Yes, I think a family mans life should be given more value for that reason alone. Should we make the children in the boat watch their fathers drown?

Wouldn't you as a father gladly drown rather than watch the entire raft go down with your family on it? The single guys on board would not have a motivational factor to sacrifice themselves. The single guys would have to be voted into the water to even the score with the married male volunteers.

Not saying this is correct logic, just mine atm. If I hear anything better I can give this up.

The married/single thing was my second choice behind putting who leaves to a vote.
