Naughty Boys
Not that I can say I've never done the same....
![]() from this morn's OREGONIAN: Ferrari road rally attracts state troopers, tickets Tuesday, August 08, 2006 Oregon State Police disrupted a rally of Ferrari vehicles Monday west of Sisters, citing at least six drivers for speeds ranging from 83 to 98 mph. The troopers stopped the vehicles on U.S. 20. They said several other high-speed vehicles apparently were involved in what organizers called the Ferrari Challenge Rally: The Rally of Northern Oregon. State police said troopers came from the Bend area in response to numerous complaints about dangerous driving of Ferrari vehicles, including speeding, risky passing and reckless driving. Participants in the rally reportedly traveled from the Willamette Valley to Black Butte Ranch west of Sisters.

Yes, they do sound naughty. Glad we don't behave like that down here in Cali.

Those darn Ferrari guys. Menaces to society, one and all.
So when are state troopers going to crack down on the ongoing, no entry fee, no pre-registration, run-what-ya-brung "Cellphone Challenge: The Rally of the Rush Hour Freeway"? I'm sure it would save more lives than nailing guys like this.

Two friends (Ninja & Hayabusa) and I were passing low-flying aircraft on our way home one night.
The Ninja and I were in the lead, slicing through late-evening traffic, with the 'Busa several car lengths back. When we got home, the Busa said that from his tailgunner vantage he saw that the cellphones immediately light up in easily half the cars the Ninja and I passed. The 'Busa is a paramedic and runs our "Air-One" helicopter. He proceeds to relate a story of a mutual friend who is a police dispatcher and a fellow motorcyclist. The dispatcher receives a 911 call one afternoon from a woman, essentially shrieking into the phone that a motorcycle has just blown by her on the interstate, and she's just bytching on and on about law breakers this, illegal that, blah blah blah. After a little while, the dispatcher says: "Ma'am, are you alone in your vehicle?" "Yes!," the virago replies, "what does that have to do with anything!!?" "Well, ma'am it's also illegal in the State of New York to use a cellular telephone while driving, unless you're using a headset. Are you using a headseat, ma'am?" {click} F*cking cagers. JP

That is a really beautiful drive out 20 from Salem to Bend. Gotta tell ya the whole Eastern part of Oregon makes Nevada look like the Garden of Eden.
Does not surprise me one bit that the Oregon Troopers were out there after these malicious Ferrari Fiends.

Yeah, the cellphone patrol got a bunch of us one day. Local sheriff's deputy blocked us in at a rest stop. He was a really cool guy; more interested in our cars than our shenanigans. He told us that they were getting irate calls from motorists. While he was sure it could not possibly be us, would we be so kind as to let that OTHER group of Porsches out here in the middle of bumfuch nowhere know that their antics were not appreciated? And that their patrol aircraft was taking to the air? Thanks...

Last weekend one of those drives didn't go so well. A buddy of mine was right behind this guy and watched the whole thing go down:

These "rally" things never work out well. Theres almost always one or two guys driving over the limit (not to them ofcourse, but to the rest of the world). I remember a drive we had a few years back where some late 20-something wrapped his 993 passengers-side around a tree, easily would have killed a co-driver.
His response?.... "its alright, I wanted a turbo anyway". Careful out there guys, the world is full of douche-bags with too much money and not enough brains.

post from the board
"It sounds like Tony is coping well. The kids are young enough that they keep forgetting that their mother is gone. Orrie is organizing a fund to help Tony out. I'll post more details as I get them." very very sad. |

Yeah, there was a guy on the Alpine 500 last year in a very fast V-8 MB coupe with a nice little roll cage, 450 SLC or something. ALmost got to see him kill someone passing on the shoulder in heavy traffic on a blind off camber turn at about double the posted limit. Heard the tire screech but no crunch of metal, his prospective victim bailed off on the shoulder, thankfully.

Certainly food for thought, isn't it? As some know, I'm dropping out of the clubs scene, and have resigned from R Gruppe. The main reason I quit R Gruppe was a personality conflict with some of the membership of this area.
I know Hwy. 20 West of Sisters pretty well. There are stretches where speed is no problem, and there are others where it is. Not knowing where the Ferrari guys got ticketed, I won't offer an opinion on their actions. But "tours" were also part of the reason I resigned from R Gruppe. I've seen some pretty crazy (95 plus) speeds on narrow rural public roads, past driveway entrances. A pet or even a child could have wandered on the road all too easily. So, group runs are NOT my bag. Group runs often mean a wide range of car and driver capabilities. Slower cars and less skilled drivers can easily get in over their heads simply trying to keep up with the hotshoes. All that said, I'm back home after a very pleasant early 911 run of 120 miles or so over rural Oregon back-roads, my bride at my side. One car, no pressure, nothing to try to prove, no problems. By all means, enjoy your cars...just be careful out there, okay? ![]()

I've seen plenty of stupid moves on so called "fun runs".
I just let em go and try to line up near the back of hte pack so i can let them go without getting in the middle of the someone's third childhood. Believe it or not it isn't usually the novices getting in over their heads, it's the hard core experienced guys who have plenty of track experience and like to make vroom vroom noises and they pretend they are Mario andretti. I have been known to get on boost on the street occasionally just to blow the carbon off the pistons, but I pick and choose the situation very carefully. I think about it beforehand and try to use logic instead of emotion to make my decisions. A long straight with limited and controlled risk is a must. Even then I accelerate and then back off to a reasonable speed and cruise. |

My favorite group drives are called "DE's". Much more controled than the public road "tours", fun runs, or whatever. While I still enjoy the camaraderie of group drives, I'm far more carefull of who I follow or surround myself with. We have had some unfortunate incidents on some of our local runs, but, at least so far, no one has been hurt. We have been lucky. A lot of the local "regulars" have, as a result, been reflecting a bit and are of a common mind to tone this down a bit. Or more like a lot. It just makes sense.
