"Replica Watches"

I have seen these "Replica Watches" on various sites on the internet but have never seen one first hand. They are copies of expensive brands such as Rolex, Breitling and Cartier. Does anyone have any experience with the quality of these copies? Are they really so close to the real thing that even pros have a tough time spotting them? Are they illegal to buy?

Thanks,

Bumper

This falls under the category of "what's the point?"

Yes, you could buy a copy of a well-known watch that from 12" away, it would be hard to tell. But you would know. So you get the "prestige" that goes with a well-known, well-recognized watch, without the price. And what's the point of that?

There are outstanding quality watches available at all price points. Just as not everyone can afford a new 997 GT3RS, there are 911 SC's.

Probably not the answer you were searching for. IMHO. YMMV. HNY.

Instead of pointing out the negatives, I'll try to be more helpfull. Here is a great online store of well-made watches at a variety of price points:

lol , back when i had my targa, some dude came to the place where i stored mine, talked to everybody about how he needed storage for his 3 Porsches and his Ferrari...

he did have 3 Porsches, one beat up old 928 with electical gremlins, a 924 with 944 convertible body kit,(read, fiberglass fibres flaking through the paint) 1 early 911 T with a 935 body kit from hell, which was rusty enough for the garage jack to simply go crunch and the car dropped over the jack.. not pretty...

and yes, A Fiero with a 308 GTO body kit, and he kept trying to pull his act , about how he needed more room for "the ferrari" and how it was worth more then all the other cars in that place put together...

i nearly pissed myself laughing

Several years ago, a friend sold me a phony Rolex for $25. I didn't care about the Rolex part, but simply a watch that kept good time for $25 sounded like a good thing.

I quickly got tired of people thinking I had a Rolex, and quit using it. It's probably still sitting in a drawer somewhere around here.

I like my Timex better.

I have a Movado that I rarely wear these days. Nice Timex Ironman sports watch on my wrist as we speak. Set me back a cool $74.

dunno how that works in the US, but i think in most of Europe, at airports, if customs spot fake gear on you(watches , designer clothes, fake perfum), or in your luggage, they will confiscate it...
they are especially watchfull for folks coming back from say China... it's actually an offence of some sort to buy counterfit goods...

don't ask me how they enforce it , and how far they will take it, but i know for fact that in Schiphol they go after these sort of things...

I actually wish they would always confiscate fakes and get serious about enforcing our copyrights and patents. The fake business is what has made some of the high-end watch companies refuse to honor warranties for any watch of theirs that was bought over the Internet, real or not. That means you can only buy in person from an authorized dealer, paying sales tax and their inflated price if you want the factory warranty. In my case, that means buying my Breitlings from the crazy expensive authorized dealer in Tysons Corner Mall.

I really love watches and know that a $20 timex keeps time about as well as a $5K Rolex.
That is why I own both. Somedays I fell like a Rolex guys, but most of the time, I feel like a swatch, timex, chrono wearing dude.
Rolex, like most expensive items in life should not be to show off. I might buy something nice to commemorate something. I got my Rolex from my dad (rest his soul) for my 25th Birthday. Makes the watch special. Otherwise who really cares.

Back in the pre-Giuliani midtown NYC days, I was taking my crew to a nice dinner over in Times Square. On the way back from there to our hotel on Lexington, we (2 pilots and 3 Flight Attendants) were approached in the opposite direction by two 'characters'. As they came close to us, one of them pulled a small gun from his hoodie and said 'give us all yo money.....'

I said quickly that we were all broke after paying for dinner, but please just take my Rolex and leave us all alone, we're just working stiffs....

I quickly peeled it off, and offered it, and they snatched it up, and started running the way we had come from. It was all over so quickly, the shock had not hit the girls yet, and the other pilot was a shell-shocked idiot anyway.

I told everyone to run the rest of the way to the hotel, and we all did. We collapsed into the couches in the lobby several blocks later, all of us out of breath. One of the F/A's says.. "Wait a minute... WE are the victims, why are we the ones running???"

I replied that the watch I gave them was a fake that I had bought for $20 that morning...... We all laughed for a week. The next trip to NYC, they all chipped in and bought me a replacement.

I must have saved $30 or $40 over the years with a fake Timex. Works just as well, and it's actually cooler than the real thing. IMO.

Same as Michael, I have 1-2 replica's that I wear when in difficult places. If someone wants to steal my Rolex or Patek replica then fine I let them have it.

Funny thing is that they usually keep as good time as the real ones...

I like a nice watch, but wouldn't pay for a Rolex. If you want a nice swiss watch that won't break the bank, try Zodiac.
