If you get your "prestige" from a watch or car, a fake is probably a good thing for you.

"Same as Michael, I have 1-2 replica's that I wear when in difficult places. If someone wants to steal my Rolex or Patek replica then fine I let them have it. "
Why invite trouble in "difficult" places, why get your wrist cut off for a fake watch. Why get robbed for a fake watch. Why even own a fake watch. Why own a clone of anything, if you can't buy the real thing, be happy with the best you can get, not some fake/clone. |

No way. I love my watches. There is some magic to a fine automatic watch. Sure, a $60 Casio digital watch will keep better time than a fancy Rolex or Omega. But the craftsmanship and engineering that goes into automatic watches is something to behold. Lots of folks think we're crazy for maintaining old air-cooled engines with no ABS or airbags and bad a/c and for plenty more money than a more modern car costs.

Military style quartz for me...both rugged and accurate. I also like a day/date feature. Retirement, combined with senior moments often bring the question: "Is today Monday?"

Dirty pool marking them "18 kt" though.
Guy brings in a woman's 'Rolex' with a broken band to sell. I asked how much he paid for it. He said $100 a couple of years ago at another pawn shop. I weighed it and told him even two years ago it would scrap for $400. Did he think they would sell it so cheap? Jim

My advice: never wear a knock-off in the shower.
And never buy an automatic. They aren't as accurate as a quartz battery watch. Even a real Rolex. How do I know? I know.

I understand them not being as accurate, I owned a Rolex GMT for fifteen years, it never had the correct time but when I sold it, I got MORE than I paid for it. It was always close, just a min. or two slow, but I forgave it when I sold it. I have had automatic watches since 1968 and still like them. A Seiko, a Bulova, a Rolex, another Seiko and now a TagHeur Tiger Woods and I like them all. They are all dead end expenses except Rolex, you will get your money back. I don't see how you can like machines like a Porsche and not like a good watch. |

I recently bought a replica Heuer Monza from a dealer online after I stumbled upon a replica watch forum. It ran about $100. Needless to say I am amazed by the quality, the thing looks near perfect. It has an authentic looking automatic movement, very pleased with it. Do I feel guilty? Not so much.

I have owned umpteen watches for the last 25 years, most of them automatic winding, mechanical watches. Lot's of different manufacturers, from Casio to Patek Phillipe. Maybe half a dozen Rolexes. In my experience, mechanical watches can be quite accurate, if maintained and regulated properly. The most accurate one I own happens to be a fairly new Rolex Explorer. It is good for about one second per week. Most of my other Rolexes are good for a second per day, or less. I have a 5512 Submariner that is over thirty years old and it does just as well as the others. They have all been regularly serviced by Rolex in Dallas. I have never had a problem with any of their work. Most people that ***** about poor performance from a watch get them serviced by local watchmakers and therein lies most of the problem. Even the large national independent repair shops turn out lousy work. I used one once, and never will again. You generally get what you pay for. What a surprise.
Other watches I own are not as accurate. Most are within 3 to 4 seconds a day. I have a few quartz watches and, while they are pretty accurate, even they do not keep perfect time. I find myself adjusting them a couple of times a year, when they are a minute or two off. Like Dean, I don't understand how people that enjoy airplanes or cars don't also like watches. I tend to like anything mechanical, or really, anything made by the hands of another, from fine wines to fine art, cameras, clothing, leather goods.....etc. JR

But I could care less about watches, washing machines, lawnmowers, chainsaws, pianos, snowmobiles, and countless other mechanical things. Watches seem primarily like overpriced jewelry to me. I once read how much a Rolex costs to make, and how much it it marked up along the line (manufacturer, to distributor to wholesaler, to retailer, etc., each of who puts something like a 400% markup on it), and it was crazy. I like most mechanical things, but I have a hard time buying or enjoying a mechanical device where 80% of it's price is on account of marketing, not labor or materials. My fake Panerai goes perfectly well with the "Turbo" emblem on the lid of my 911sc..

If you buy a good quality watch and take care of it, its an INVESTIMENT guys! On the other hand, if you do not want to make money on things, thats your choice...
