You're either Chinese or American. Which is it? The irony is that I can rattle off a host of slurs in Chinese that would be hugely offensive if said by a Chinese man to another. But instead this round eye can make them into light humor because the mere fact that I know what those words mean proves I have a knowledge and interest in Chinese language, culture and history.

Anyway, I believe the photo atthe beginning of this thread is from Geno's in Philly. I was there last Friday night. We wanted to go to Pat's, but felt we had to spend some money at Geno's because of their signs. So we did and then got seconds at Pat's a few minutes later.

I am American. I was born here as were my parents. Nevertheless, I am of hispanic heritage and I relate to being hispanic. In my case of Mexican origin. And I take pride in that culture as much as I can but I take pride in being an American too. If we were at war with Mexico I'd fight on the American side, no question. But I don't see WHY I (or any other member of an ethnic group) HAS to address an ultimatum like the one you posted? Are we going Big Brother and to tests of loyalty now?

Yes, and anyone can pull out the old heritage card to claim offense at this or that comment. Pat McGroin, having never been to Ireland, probably barely able to find it on a map, grew up in Bethedsa, MD, but considers himself Irish and takes great offense at anything other than gushing praise for the nationality. Get over it. If you're an American and don't have dual citizenship, you are nothing else. Go to any other country and they see you as your passport sees you, not whatever your great grandparents were.

They don't see you as any different than anyone else who looks like you - from their point of view, of course.How is not liking being called names or being ethnically or racially stereotyped and SAYING SO, "pulling" some kind of "card"? Maybe you DON'T identify with an ethnic or racial heritage so it is harder for you to understand someone who does?

What some folks are in a rush to get offended over, I don't see as racial slurs. Chinaman used to not be considered a racial slur, just like Jap wasn't. Now a bunch of whiners get their panties in a wad and add some words to the growing list of taboos. The political correctness climate does not at all change a word's original meaning to me. Anyway, I have much more creative slurs for people I want to offend and they leave no doubt as to my intent.
