You can find really good live footage of the fires if you click here:

http://www.latimes.com/

then locate and click on the Live Video link in the center-left of the page that says: KTLA cameras on the fire line.

Anyone know of a good site with satellite photos? Would be great to download high-res or clickable photos.

A bit of searching turned up this page. Click on the image to enlarge or right-click to save to desktop. Decent resolution but not great.

My former home (Fallbrook) is being evacuated and is burning. The firefighters are trying to keep the fire from reaching any more of the town. I feel horrible...

How many houses have been destroyed? I just saw the Governator on TV a few minutes ago, and he said 800, but that seems low.

But even if it ends up being 10X that amount, from SB to SD, would that really affect housing prices or rental rates, given that is a tiny fraction of the millions of houses in that area? Esp. given that most who lost their house are not going to buy a new one, but will rebuild their current one (and if they don't, someone else will).

I can't see how this could affect housing prices at all. Maybe rental rates in the immediate areas that were most impacted might go up a bit.

Anyways, sure looks bad out there, hopefully it gets under control soon.

Just spoke with one of my old neighbors. I used to live one street away from Borrego Canyon up near El Torro and apparently the whole canyon went up yesterday evening. He said there were a few crispy houses (his words) on the edge of the canyon and several people lost patio furniture and garden equipment but he wasn't aware of any houses lost, at least in that development. It seems like they has a troublesome night last night, staying up and hosing things off. Apparently there were flames fifty feet over the roof tops. He said the glow is no longer visible and the fire has moved on, but the next development along is the next in the line of danger. He told me that he canyon where I used to walk with my boys now looks like the surface of the moon.
It seems to bring it into eerie perspective when I can picture these places and know how close the fire came to people I know. I hope everyone we know on the boards here and their friends and families get away with it as lightly as my friends seem to have done.

Well, a good friend of mine grew up in Malibu, and her parents still live there. As of yesterday the fire was licking at the edge of their neighbor's property line. Haven't heard anything since then.

I drove from LA to Bakersfield today. In the pre-dawn morning, I could see a few orange spots of flames in the distance as I passed Magic Mountain. By the time I returned through there at mid-day, all those relatively new homes lining the western side of I-5 at the Newhall Pass area had the fire coming over the ridge behind their houses. Very scary.

my dad lives in Santee tucked up against a mountain. Luckily there isn't anything near him...Lakeside fire is closest. This is the worst I ever remember wrt sheer numbers, but I recall some very scary ones when I lived in Pasadena. Coming out to everything covered in ash and the sun being smothered at noon by smoke is pretty spooky.

Jim, was down near the water in SM last night. Small but perfect conditions. It's funny because I remember when the winds hit on Saturday afternoon my first thought was, "hmm, wonder if a swell is running." Normally we pray for santa anas. But this one didn't work out so well. Hope you guys are all safe.

Watched a bit of footage of a DC-10 doing fire drops up here. Amazing...

If someone needs a place in San Clemente to crash and doesn't mind two puggles you're welcome to a room. We don't have a big place but it's better than sleeping on the beach. I have covered parking for one car if you need that.

Yeah...my son and I killed it last night...2-3' sheet glass barrels...WOOHOO...there is a contiuous ribbon of ash about 2-300 yds offshore...looks kinda like an oil slick. Even the inside was fully covered in a sooty black kinda junk. Tried not to swallow water or get in my sinuses. See you @ Infineon? I'm ALL AlONE this weekend, so I'm looking for dinner partners.

Fire Dept. was on my street last night cause a fire flared up at San Fernando Road and Highway 14, about 3/4 mile away, but I'm good. Lots of ash.

I've been working too much so I haven't gotten out. I'm hoping for a Thanksgiving santa ana like we normally have...by mid november I'll be out of post on this project and able to breathe/sleep.

I'll be up at Infineon with my son in tow. We're staying with Don in Petaluma...not sure on our plans but I think there is a bbq/party at the track saturday night. Got the full cage in the car now but I'm still having some 2nd gear trans issues. Maybe the drive up to Sonoma will sort it out

Man, I guess I have had my head buried in the sand the last few weeks. I did not realize things were as bad as they are until yesterday when I actually had a chance to stop and watch the news. My wife and I are from San Clemente orginally, but now live in West Tennessee. We still have a lot of family out there and I found out yesterday that some of them had to evacuate. I feel for any of you that might be going through that (though I doubt they are here on the board right now) as my family and I had to go through the very thing 7 years ago when we lived in SW Montana. An idiot camper disobeyed the NO CAMPFIRE rule at the time, and it started a fire (during a very dry year) about 10 miles south of us on the same bench our property was on. The winds brought it to within 3 miles of us in 2 days. They evac'd us at that point and we had to be out for 3 weeks. It sure is a trying time. Good luck to all out there and be safe. Hope rain comes your way soon...
