However, I recall a Curb Your Enthusiam episode where Larry's recently-departed mother could not be buried in her grave plot because it was discovered that she had a tattoo on her rump. Conversely, I have known a few Holocaust survivors, who were Jewish, and made no attempt at all to hide the numbers on their arms. Others might even have seen those tattoos as a badge of honor. Everyone can rationalize anything one way or another, which makes any argument other than personal preference pretty weak, IMHO.

Funny and more than a bit naive in my opinion. I SINCERELY hope you are right but... I would have said this too once. How old are your children, Sammy?
My Story: My then-supersonic scholastic daughter, the one who is/was a National Hispanic Scholar, multi-lettered All-CIF waterpolo player, OVER 4.5 gpa, accepted-to-Ivy-League-schools as an undergrad, etc. went off to UCLA in 2000 and I would drive down from Pasadena to take her to dinner every other week. I was newly divorced and struggling so I needed the regular contact more than she did with me but....one night I am dropping her off and she pivots to get out of my car so the rear of her pants ride down on her and I see it. A TRAMP STAMP over her crack! The car door closed and I am just about apoplectic with upset. I couldn't stop thinking of it. This is my baby. The light of my life! She's beautiful in my opinion and she was now well, defiled as far as I am concerned. Long story short, I found out it happened a few months before, during the week she was in Hawaii after high school that her mother gave her as a graduation gift. Her mother went with her to Hawaii and didn't know she & her friend got matching ones put in the same place. I read her the riot act. As calmly as I could but with a GREAT amount of upset in my voice and bearing I explained what that meant to people of my age in particular. And that it always will. "How will you explain this to your children?" "You can't even see it!" I got back all the protestations you would expect, etc. Bottomline, its still there. I am STILL upset as hell about it. I would have BET MY SOUL she wouldn't do this, but she did. Despite your comments to the contrary you cannot know everything your child will do and you CERTAINLY can't (and shouldn't, though in situations like this it pains me to say it) control what they do in the future.

apparently to reinforce the idea that one should never make assumptions regarding the reading abilities of your audience

I walked around for 30 years thinking and saying the same thing as you, though not for religious purposes. I even told Jim when I saw the tattoo he had that I would never consider getting a tat, then he got shot and I changed my mind. I did not get it to be cool. Your kids are going to do what they want when they are adults, so it is a bit of a reach to say neither you nor they will ever get one.

Quite. The first three paragraphs were irrelevent to the thread. The writer assumed that we enjoyed the personal ramblings of a painted man. Know your audience.

It makes me laugh a little... (though I think there's not much trashier than tramp stamps, and that's reason 13,400,003 I would never want a girlchild). I got the first one -- the large cross on my upper arm -- when I was 27 or so. Finally found an artist who "got" my idea, and he'd worked all over the world, Japan, etc., so I trusted him. I was living in NYC, and had come up to Syracuse to visit (Irish Catholic) mom. I walk into the kitchen one morning, in a t-shirt (which usually just covers the bottom of the tat). Mom's sitting there, having coffee, and I reach down into the dishwasher to grab something, which evidently stretches the shirt sleeve enough so the bottom inch of the tat shows. Mom pfffffffts out her coffee and says, in that plaintive, incredulous Irish Catholic mom voice "WHY, oh WHY, did you get a tattoo on your body?!!" I deadpan -- "mom, where else would I get a tattoo?" JP

Slacker, I about "shat" as the expression goes.
If I am "out of step" or a duffer, etc. I don't care. You are young enough (I assume) to have one and you STILL think "there is not much trashier". I am ALWAYS going to be terribly uncomfortable with the fact that she has this. Its never going to change. It doesn't make her other than the devoted, high achiever, highly successful daughter she has always been...but it is never far from my mind.

Interesting how it turned into a discussion about religion, everything is religion or politics here, curious.

The title and the last sentence of your original post were of interest. By the way, I voted on your poll. The rest was extraneous, though I understand that you might have a different feeling about it. Regarding the religion diversion, that's a bizzare tangent that I will steer clear of.

Don't care for them. I see one on a women, and I instantly think "Trailer Trash". With me the same goes for any piercings except one or two in the lobes of the ears. I never understood why pretty women would think they look better with nose, lip or eyebrow rings. Maybe they want to look strange. I don't get it.

I'm not the typical guy who might have a tattoo, but I have one. I got it in the last year and had it done in French Polynesia. It's a little band of Polynesian symbols strung together around my upper arm above the sleeve line. It is out of the public eye, so most people have no idea, which is what I wanted to achieve when I had it placed so high up the arm. Personally, I like looking at it. It reminds me of an awesome visit to the islands that my wife and I had and ensures I will never forget it.
Personally, I don't really care if someone likes my tattoo or not. It's none of their business. Last edited by 450knotOffice; 11-06-2007 at 10:07 PM.. |

Whoa, Shaun, good quote, but you forgot one of the big ones! If you eat shrimp, lobster, mussels, clams or any form of shellfish, woe betide you:
Leviticus 11:9-12 says: 9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. 10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: 11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you. -------------------------- Quote:

Tobra -
your story is pretty unique, I think this thread would be remiss if we all sat around pissing and moaning about why one should / shouldn't get a tat. Your story is about the memory of a man who obviously made a difference to a lot of people, and without whom the world is likely a poorer place. I for one would like to see a pic of the tat that Jim Pantages inspired you - and others - to make a permanent part of your own bodies. If you're ok with that of course.

I have been looking for a good tattoo theme for 20 years. I have now decided and will go carve both my upper outer (truly muscular) arms with the following:
Right arm: My kids names like this: Olivia Julia Isak Hannah Left arm: IX XI
