Karma.
1. Developer buys cheap federal land, gets zoning approval, and clear-cuts the mountainsides for homes. Makes lots of $ and dissappears.(i.e. Charles Hurwitz and Maxxim debaucle).

2. People buy ritzy housing in the middle of the boonies, and then change it to retain that "city" feel.

3. No more root systems to slow/absorb the water and hold the soil together. It rains and mud flows. Expensive houses buried.

4. Insurance co. calls it act of god and defrauds its paying customers. Fed does nothing.

5. Federal tax $'s then bail out homeowners. So not only is national forestry property lost, the home owners get their mistakes(azzes) wiped for them.


There is a chain of people and events involved which led up the described situation, a chain.

Regardless of what you may have read, this area, except for the govt. reliant segment, is largely rebuilt. Your comments would be equivalent to me stating that all Californians are skate punks or hippie. I know ya'll got 'em, and we have welfare dirtbags. Hippies didn't make CA great, & welfare recipients didn't make New Orleans the city it is. BTW, there are lots of people here that have worked tirelessly to rebuild their lives that would probably loosen your teeth for inferring that they were "sitting on a pile of rubble saying woe is me."

IIRC, most of the houses built on sand are uninsurable.
