Normy, a lot of what you say is how it happened with me...once you get out
of Detroit you see other parts of the country and the world and realize how
nice it is. Not to dump on my home state, but the actual city of Det. is a mess.
before I moved to LA I looked up the crime stats and saw that it has 1/2
of the violent crime that Det. has. Now, im not naive enough to think that
violent crime can not happen anywhere at any time...but on many occaisions I
have driven down Supulevada from North of LA down to the South Bay with
the top down in the 911 and have been perfectly safe for that 25-30 mile drive not having to look at and be surrounded by burned out buildings and nappy headed crack hos.... try doing that in the Motor City....

The last time I went to the Rennaisance Center (the pride and revitalization joy of Detroit), I remember the entrance being located right next to the bridge to Canada, parking was hidden/unavailable, signage confusing, and it being quite a hike to get into the building.
It seemed to me that this was the very last thing that should have screwed up....but it was.

One important thing Gulliani did to turn NY around was to get rid of petty crime, starting with the important places like public transit, and go from there.
Detroit can't even revitalize and fill four square blocks of downtown with shops. Why would anyone bother investing there? Waterfront property supposedly has picked up in recent years but unless there is basic infrastructure it won't last long.

Kwame A great illustration of how power corrupts. He's been the center of Detroit controversy for years, starting with his wife's Lincoln Navigator ... leased by the City of Detroit. He's now got $50,000 in personal expenses on his City credit card unaccounted for ... one being a trip to luxury resort in Vail with his "Chief of Staff".

What's always a hoot is the religous aspect. Kwame was in North Carolina last weekend to lead a prayer breakfast for the Martin Luther King Association. But according to the mayor of Asheville who invited him, the Kwamster "soaked in a luxury resort hot tub and got a massage with a woman other than his wife" This was before the story of the affair broke this week.

People like Kwame become so intoxicated by the power, I think they truly believe they are entitled to have their personal expenses paid for by the lowly taxpayers. All the politicians do the same thing - to varying degrees, of course.

Why shouldn't he be that way? He gets reelected, he stays out of jail. With voters like that, polticians would only end up honest and competent by accident.

Yup. And I think he'll weasel his way out of this too. He's got the best teacher there ever was - Clinton. He's playing it exactly the same. Focusing everything on the affair, how it was a tough time in his life, it is a deeply personal issue that he regrets, how he needs to pray more, blah, blah, blah. All the while, never even hinting at the fact that he lied about it in a trial that cost the taxpayer's a cool $9 million. The citizens of Detroit will forgive him once again and all will be right. He might even be able to make a run for Governor now!
