The F-104s used by the Germans at Luke AFB, AZ, were being retired the year The Right Stuff was made and the producers were very lucky to be able to borrow one for the movie. You can just make out the "69" on the tail of the movie airplane, the number representing the 69th Fighter Squadron to which the jet belonged.

Such a great book - such a great movie - such a great man.

I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat all over again - and I know the ending!

But I can't remember - did the engine flame out? And the additional thrust he seems to get from throwing switches - did that bird have a rocket attached?

The real one did have a rocket.

^^ Great story on Yeager's ejection from the F-104!

I'm sure most fans of the movie know this but the real Chuck Yeager makes a cameo (a couple actually) as Fred in Pancho's bar. He asks: "You all wanna drink whiskey?".

A timely pic since I've been considering a new pair of z rims!

ACS Z rims were quite the noodly beast! I did bent mine many of times over like that and they always popped right back up true (well... mostly true)

They bring a heck of a premium on fleabay!
