The most disturbing part of this story is the first phrase..."Went to Denny's tonight for dinner".

The dine and dash I did was in Spain. They were REALLY rude to my German girlfriend and I spoke the international language back to them. Next thing the brought someone in who looked like a gorilla and he sat at the next table staring at me. Must have been a cook or kitchen hand, to keep and eye on me and to shut me up. Once we had finished our meals and the rest of the place had quietened down the staff went out the back so we took off.

There was a kid shot dead by a cop after a dine and dash at an IHOP about two yrs. ago in Alexandria, VA. This particular IHOP had had so many dine and dashes that they hired off duty cops for night time security. Around NoVA cops are allowed to work off duty security jobs in police uniform. The kids ran out, the waitress alerted the cop and he ran out after them. By then they were already in their car. The cop jumped in front of the car to stop them and the kid floored the gas at him. So the cop shot into the vehicle, killing the kid in the back seat, but not the driver. Last I heard, the cops didn't get disciplined for it and all the parents were, of course, suing.

You need food to live, right? In a country as rich as ours, food should be free. No one should go hungry. When I'm President, we'll have socialized nutrition.

I used to bartend while working my way through college, in a variety of restaurants, clubs and bars... some restaurants will actually make the waitperson pay back the restaurant when customers dine and dash, to hold someone accountable for the customers... but smarter restaurants will not because they do not want to be liable for putting the waitperson in harms way if they try to stop a dine and dasher.
It happened a few times in restaurants that I worked in and a few times to me as a bartender...you get busy and cant possibly keep an eye on everyone, but most customers at the bar are by their nature more laid back, cool and if they are eating they leave car keys or something by their plate if they have to get up to use the phone or restroom. |

Some friends of mine go to their favorite Chinese resturant once a week and are very good friends with the owners and staff. They had a couple of business colleges from australia visiting them so they thought they might have some fun with the guests.
My buddies talked to the owner and staff earlier in the day and got the plan sorted then later that night after dinning, the friend said to the Aussies "In this country we always do a dine and dash. You two stand up and say out loud "Oh, I think I've left the lights on in my car" and walk out then drive around the front and when we see the car we'll run and jump in. As the two friends ran out the front door the show was on and the owner and the main cook "chased" after them with two frying pans banging together over his head and the other chap waving a meat cleaver, LOL. Well the business colleges got such a fright then didn't slow down enough and took off leaving the friends to the mercy of the frying pan and meat cleaver wielding resturanteers. The next day the Aussie visitors looked a bit sheepish having left their hosts in a rather tight spot. But once they were told it was a setup for their amusement there were big laughs all 'round. |

But, wouldn't it be great if you heard about some folks that dashed only to leave behind something of value or even the freakin' keys? I'd love to hear them explaining why they were all in the parking lot with check unpaid when one of them realized what the real cost would be if he left whatever it was behind. I've never dashed, but I leave restaurants all the time with the money left in the little book. Not showing either, but a decent tip included. Not once has anyone even taken a second look. They make it too easy if you ask me. |
