A friend of mine had PRK about 18 years ago. She was bordering on legally blind status. Hers was one of the very first procedures done up here. He now has the same prescrition as I do, very very very mild, I only wear my glasses at a movie or work when I am tired... we are both 38.......

Not sure if this helps, but is a data point none the less......

Cheers

This is an interesting thread. I have thought about eye surgery for some time. I have poor vision, without glasses I could not recognize you from 10' away. On the other hand, wearing glasses is not so terribly bad. Not having to would be a convenience to me, not more. As for the risk, I've been waiting for one of the methods to accumulate 30+ years track record and for that track record to be studied in detail. Sounds like in 5-10 years I'll be able to really weigh the risk vs the benefit. When it comes to my vision, I am conservative.

Ohhh that just wasn't right.

Seriously, I was inlolved in an explosion at work in the late 80's and got small metal shards in both eyes. Had surgery to remove the metal and surrounding rust, but not to correct any vision issues.

I was completely blind for over a week until they took the bandages off. All that stuff they say about the other senses getting better is true.

Hmmmm! I would say untrue: before surgery, I was nearsighted and could not read anything unless they are 3 inches away. After surgery, I had a very very mild farsightedness.

I had LASIK when the failure rate was 3%. I went from legally blind in one eye and severely nearsighted in the other (correctible with glasses or contacts to better than 20/20) to about 20/70 with glasses and uncorrectible low contrast acuity and "graininess" in my vision. I cannot see road signs at over 100 feet unless they are black and white. Any lower contrast and I cannot read them. For six years I was almost unable to read because the letters on the page were "chunky" and I had to "decode" them. The whole thing put me into a severe depression for about 3-4 months. It slowly got better, but I cannot resolve detail to restore vision beyond 20/70, 10+ years later

But good luck. And be sure to read all the paperwork they give you to waive their liability.

I had lasik about 8 years ago - some of the best money I have spent - The only warning I have to give you is water intake. Yes - you have to be completely hydrated from the inside at all times or you will have fuzziness around the outside of your vision, especially if you enjoy being outdoors, driving a motorcycle, driving in a convertible, riding in a boat, nightime especially.

Took me about six months - but still enjoy 20/20 vision.

I had lasik done 2 years ago.

No problems, I was in and out in 30 minutes, slept the rest of the day, and wore my sunglasses when outside for another week. Never any problems.

When I was a kid they told me I'd wear glasses till I died. Now I'm 20/15. I consider it a moder miracle.

Agreed. I'm 46 and my eyes have undergone some recent changes. One eye went from -7.25 to -6.0 and the other -6.00 to -6.25. I would be bummed if I had done the PRK a few years back.

Well, as of yesterday, I'm up to 20/25, but as others & my doctor told me, it will take some time before my sight gets to the Sweet Spot but it is so nice to wake up & open my eyes and really SEE things!!! Still very limited on the PC, but no big deal since I'm looking at the big picture

Funny thing Joe, one of the girls helping the doc out & handling my post treatment remembered me from high school, recently divorced and wants me to take her out when my eyes get better then later that night, my ex called whining that she regretted letting me go and for 3 weeks now, a girl that I dated back in the mid 80s, has been calling, she searched me out after all these years, to bad she lives on the other coast

1. DO NOT SQUINT.

2. KEEP YOUR EYES LUBRICATED.

3. DO NOT LET YOUR WIFE COOK ONIONS.

Sorry for the block caps, but I learned all three the hard, painful way.

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks Paul, I have been doing all of that and yesterday tested 20/20 and the doc is very pleased with the progress
