Supe, the guy sounds like a cancer. No amount of job skills can make up for bringing down the morale of the rest of the team. I had the same situation at my last company.

This guy came in - MBA, 20 years management experience, plenty of energy - but he was a complete a-hole to the rest of the design team. The pipe designers, I & E designers, and civil designers that we had assembled all had 20+ years of experience. No degrees, but they were the best! This guy looked at them as not much more than janatorial or clerical even though they were professionals who probably made as much as he did.

But since he had the "degree" and he was leading the projects, he thought he crapped ice cream. I brought him into my office one day - after multiple complaints from multiple designers - and told him, I'd rather lose you than lose my designers (we share personnel on projects).

He became a pretty decent guy after that and everybody grew to not necessarily like him, but at least tolerate him. Some people just have a superior attitude.

I treat everyone as an equal and everyone loves me, even though I know I'm superior in just about every way.

Bottom line, if the guy is bringing down the productivity of the rest of your people, you have to either tune him up, or cut him loose.

If it is the former, send him to charm school and take advantage of his good points. If the latter, get him out of there.
Good luck.

These are the same thoughts I have. We have a similar guy here who is a techincal genius, but lacks social skills. We just ignore the social part because of his other talents. On the other hand he is not a back stabber.

that was a personal attack? Read it more like a pointed comment myself, but I am sort of a dick

Umm, my comment is pretty basic. Supe is a very opininated guy, and what's 1 way on the boards is usualy the same in regular life.

Besides, you guys are suggesting that he go after him with numbchucks and sakcs of coins. huh.

See if you can get the office skank to ask him to meet her in the stairwell for some foolin' around, then when he does, as soon as he gets his hand up under her blouse, she screams.

Problem solved.

I appreciate the comments and especially the support.

I am not offended by the remarks that appear critical or perhaps disrespectful or judgemental. Electronic communication sucks. As a consequence, some of you guys make assumptions that are neither helpful nor accurate. FWIW, I am indeed direct. Even, sometimes, gently confrontational. Remember, my work is labor relations in the construction industry. Communication in my world is refreshingly candid. Blunt. But not disrespectful. Cards MUST be laid on the table, face-up, in my world. Anything less ensures disaster. But....I am widely beloved if I do say so myself. That is neither here nor there for you guys but just so you know......I am widely respected not only in Labor circles but in the Business community as well. One of my proudest accomplishments was the fairly heartfelt and resounding support and compliments I got from the business community when I stepped down from the twelve years in my position at the state Labor department. They said I was fair, and open, and consistent, and respectful and they appreciated my approach and were sorry to see me leave. For a dyed-in-the-wool "labor guy" I regarded that as high praise.

Anyway.... with respect to this co-worker, I have done my best and now am done. I tried very hard in a warm and personal and even intimate fashion. This guy is a former Porsche guy. He's got a restored, Stone Grey 356C in his driveway that he will not remove the cover from. Won't touch it. He's just a weird guy. And again, I can see now that his values simply do not include loyalty or friendship or teamwork whatsoever. He is a bit of a workplace 'sociopath' in this regard. I am not a black-and-white thinker, generally. Every rule has exceptions. Nothing is easy or certain. Except people. I think I can trust just about everybody. There are a few that I KNOW I can trust. And then there are a few I know I cannot trust. This guy has moved from Category 1 to Category 3. And I am sad about that.

He has a 356 that he won't remove the cover from in your neck of the woods with all the rain?

Yeah, I think it is safe to say you have done everything you can. I hate situations like what you are experiencing, as a hostile, or not friendly work enviroment sucks.

Just keep an eye on him, it sounds like that is about all you can do?

Only one picture was taking of me during this summer's hippie fair but I know how much you guys like my cross-dressing antics so here it is. Obviously I was not finished dressing as I would never go out in public topless. Rest assured that the finished ensemble was FABULOUS.

If he truly is a sociopath, all the more reason to use the office skank method to get rid of him.

Yukyukyukyuk.

Seriously, I feel for you... sociopaths are the worst... it never ends well with them.

Sometimes, they even come back a week after they've been fired and shoot up the place.

You did that to me on purpose. You know Z-Man doesn't allow topless pictures....

I have said this before.

A green fanny pack with a blue dress?

You are obviously out of your mind!

I didn't know hippies square dance. Very nice ensamble. And while it is odd, I find I respect you more for posting a pic of yourself in a dress. Man, I need a beer.
