Actually, by 0% I meant that I never drink milk (because it's poisonous), not that I drink skim. I can see the misunderstanding

I wonder how cheap milk you be if they only offered lets say 2% and nothing else.

Same with gas, one octane level, how much would that save?

Hi John, us New Zealanders don't like to talk to those dirty forigners but I'm guessing they are the same as us.

Our milk is homogenised (yes spelling is correct) and I believe it's a sort of heat treatment that kills off something but doesn't give it that UHT cooked taste. Also my mistake the 3% stuff I use is actually 3.8% - so the same as your 4%

We can get the UHT but I keep it as emergency milk only.

Bill, a thousand apologies, my conflation of your nationality with Australia was entirely unintentional. I don't imagine you are put off as deeply as I would be had you unintentionaly referred to me as Canadian, however.

We are starting to see UHT milk here in the USA, but market acceptance is slow, insofar as it's just ODD to not refrigerate a dairy product.

Sorry again, I shall raise a glass high in the direction of the Southern Hemisphere on the next ANZAC day. . .

I prefer whole milk. We keep whole milk on hand for coffee (her concession!) and skim for morning cereal (my concession). Once in a while, I'll pour the whole milk on my cereal...mmmmmmm....milk...

I've never heard of anyone consuming so much milk that it was toxic, but alcohol on the other hand... How consistent are you on your poison consumption standards?

Here in "America's Dairyland" (Wisconsin) we all drink 2%. Every one of us. And we all get it straight from the cow. We all have cows.

2% here. I had no idea whole milk was only 4% fat.

Is 4% bad, or is it just an issue of fat intake affecting weight? I've been drinking 2% milk in huge volume since I was a kid. I have almost stopped drinking sodas, and I usually only drink tea half of the year (when it's hot). Milk, apple juice, and water fill the void.

Personal opinion follows, since the doctors here will freak...
It's not the volume, it's that mammals are not meant to drink milk after being weened, and are not meant to drink the milk of other mammals, and are not meant to drink milk honking full of artificial additives. It has no nutritional value, and contributes to poor digestion, as well as having some links to dozens of other maladies. There are lots of things that have no nutritional value and might contribute to severe diseases, and you wouldn't consume them, but milk got a good PR rep early on, and the Dairy Board will try to convince you to drink several glasses of their product, in lieu of anything else, every day.

During medical school I lived in a 22 person Co-Ed house. Evening meals were cooked for us so that there was more time to hit the books/bars. We shopped for food that was available for other meals and went through at least 20 gallons of milk a week purchased on a wholesale account.

We used to get a crate or two each of chocolate, 0%, 1%, 2% and Whole milk (4%) which filled a commercial fridge floor.

An aside - No one died drinking that much milk despite being future doctors and desiring other lactating sources.

I'll continue taking the credit for simplifying our milk purchases to 0%, 4% and some Hershey's syrup. It was a lesson in health and mixology. Only a few people went for straight Skim or Whole - most were mixers. I was ~2% on cereal and ~1% in a glass at dinner. Guests for dinner were always surprised how fatty (4%) whole milk is when instructed how to mix their favorite ratio.

I have always felt that Whole milk should be labled 4% so that consumers can directly compare the fat content. I know obese people that could train themselves to drink something other than a quart a day of Whole milk (and sugar saturated sodas).

Another aside - Why does soda have the amount of sugar that it does? Because if soda had any more sugar it would precipitate out - it is a saturated solution.
