+1. My kids may have tried that sort of behavior...once...

I'm not saying that kids are easy or a pleasure to have around 24/7 but IMO the effort is totally worth it. YMMV.

Dude, some nights I wonder who the he!! is raising MY kids!!!!

My son is going to be 5 in a few days. He and I shoveled our driveway and made some hardware store runs this weekend. I made him hot chocolate( coocoo as he calls it.) We had a great time.

Tonight he is being a monster!!!!!!!!!!

Not listening, picking on his sister, generally just being a PIA.He picks on her, she cries. We separate them and it's quiet for a while. Rinse and freakin' repeat.

Oh , the joy of kids.

I firmly believe it's why we get 9 months to prepare for the 'bundle of joy', and another year before they can move around freely. I've got three (9,7,& 2.5), and my wife is a flippin' saint/stay at home mom. I can't tell you how relieved I am to go to work on Monday morning. I often lament that my drive home is spent gearing up for the onslaught that I will face as I walk in the house...

That being said: Our kids are remarkably obedient. smart. funny. destructive. clever. ENERGETIC. well behaved. mischievous. curious. thoughtless. lazy. bored. magical.

I called a friend who is about to have a second child to remind him not to buy anything of value for the next 10 years...it's just going to get the ***** beat out of it. My 2 year old has done wondrous artwork on the hood of my 911 with sidewalk chalk...yet I haven't laughed so hard at ANYTHING as the recent encounter with my mother-in-law when, out of the blue, said 2 year looked grammy square in the face and announced for all to hear..." I poop on your head".

To conclude: My wife and I waited 8 years before having children, during which time we traveled the globe and lived large...I look back and think to myself that life didn't REALLY get interesting for us until Emma Rose Marie Welch arrived January 20th, 2000.

PS: I can't stand OTHER peoples kids though...

Other people's kids are rotten little self-centered trolls. Your own kids are mischievous charming angels.

Ah... Rose colored glasses.

Sounds about right to me - I have a 4 year old and a 3 month old.

The 3 month old is darn near a saint.

The 4 year old can be good but generally chooses the alternative.

I kid...

He's a very good kid and usually only acts up when he is with us - out in public or out with friends he is generally regarded as the only kid they don't mind having around (my friends that is).

I heart my rotten little self-centered trolls.

On a serious note...

Following John Rosemond's parenting philosophy will lead to health, happy, children and spouse. He expounds what's known as "basic old fashioned parenting". (A search on "john Rosemond" will get you oodles of info.)

It runs the gamut. Yesterday I doled out the fury when my boy (3.5) wasn't behaving at Christmas photos. It was pretty horrible.

Today he calmed sat on my lap and watched race videos on You Tube with me.

It's so variable I don't try to define it. I've seen kids that are great and horrible....and they are the SAME KIDS. Just like you and I have our moodswings.

The family in front of us didn't get their 3 year old to take the family photo yesterday...he just ran out of frame crying. I'm sure that will be a special card to send out.

You won't understand until you have one/some of your own. Threads like this are why I keep a tight reign on the kids when out in public. Maybe too tight, since maybe they don't like what you're doing! At home, it'd be impossible.

I know we aren't all of the same religion here on Pelican but I think the story I tell can translate well.

I got a call from my wife this morning just after 2 other calls from very negative people wanting me to solve a problem for them regarding our services. aargghh

My son got on the phone and told me that Santa had sent him a letter. He was so excited that Santa knew who he was and was going to come to our house and that Macky shouldn't bark at the reindeer or they might be scared and run away and Santa doesn't like cookies but Rudolph likes chocolate milk, "just like me Daddy!"

Then it was my Sarah's turn. She is 2.5 and hasn't really got the whole"talking coherently" thing down but I understand that she got a letter from Santa as well. Oh, and he is bringing her Bahbyandthedimncastle. Uh, okayyyyyyyyyy.

I told them I would have to check it out when I got home.

When I got home tonight, before we even sat down to eat, they ran up with their letters and I had to read them to each of them, word for word.

I had a long day at work with lots of different levels of stress but when I get home and my kids are genuinely glad to see me it makes it all just right.

Another good time of the day for me is before leaving for work. I peek in on the kids and cover them up or move the toys around and give them a kiss. They are so peaceful. You just have to wonder what they are dreaming about.
(Yes, I kiss my wife goodbye every day, too.)

I have 3 young kids- 4 yo extremely active boy, and 2yo active twin girls. We have the rear of the house fence off from the rest of the house. Temporarily installed vinyl picket fence between the dining & living room, and gates in the hallway and back stairs. There is no furniture in that part of the house except for a sectional sofa, and dining table. No chairs or barstools as the twins will climb on anything if you turn your back. They actually team up and use each other to boost one another.

I try to get home at a reasonable time from work as my wife can be a quivering shell of herself at the end of the day with the kids.

They sure are cute when sleeping though...

+ infinity. It's the kind of thing you'll only know if you've got kids you love. There's nothing better than walking in the door and my 2 year old running to me with arms outstretched, yelling "daddy!!!!!" and giving me a huge bear hug.

My daughter is 5.

A 2.5 minute sample:

Whats that?
Who built it?
Do they have a dog?
Is the dog nice?
Can I have a dog?
Why not?
Alex has a dog, why can' I have one?
Is that a Porsche?
Whats a ' weak ass ricer' daddy?
Why can't I say it, you just did?
Is it an adult word?
Which word?
Weak?
Ass?
Ricer?
I'm hungry, can we get McDonalds?
How about Teriyaki?
Why can't we eat out?
Why don't we ever do the things I want?

+ infinity ditto ^^^ Nice post Wayne! Congrats.

I could not imagine my world without my children.
I love my wife very much and our children were created in our image, for our happiness.
Seeing a child with my wifes qualities and with my qualities fills my heart.
5 kids with 4 different personalities; (oldest & youngest are like twins) pure joy!

Your kid = cute and mischevious
Other people's kids = devil spawn

Yeah, that pretty much covers it.

Apparently some don't. I understand that kids will be kids, but whatever happened to manners and civility? I wasn't allowed a free for all when visiting along with my parents, nor were my children when visiting along with us. It's part of the grooming process. Yeah, no fun watching chickens (wtf??) running around and having to sit there and shut up while the parents sip tea, but that's what growing up is all about - learning how to behave.

It doesn't sound too far out of whack to be honest. Not that it is appropriate, but here's my take:

1. THe one year old. Stranger danger! Wakes up in a strange place with strange people around. My daughter FREAKS OUT when strangers are around and we aren't. The only male she'll look at/be with is me. (and I am planning on keeping it that way) This is called stranger anxiety. Oh she is LOUD, ear piercing loud. You know when something is soooo loud you can feel your ear-drums vibrate? Un-freekin-real. THis morning my 4 year old son put on ear-muffs to get thru breakfast. Anyone that thinks they can come over and reason with my 16 month old daughter? I'll pay your plane ticket.

2. The 3 year old... Ever heard of "the terrible twos?" Well they don't end the day they turn 3 my friend. The 2-3 year old has learned that they can make their own decisions and are hell-bent on excercising their right to be independent at all costs. Often it's just they way it is. Ask those that know me, I'm definitely not shy about discipline. Son is sent to his room/corner at least once per day for doing something he knows is wrong. ...Young boys are absolute pistol packin monkey children. They climb, yell, run, scream, etc.. because that's who they are. a 3 year old boy that sits quietly on the couch probably has no pulse.

Once again, I wasn't there and it could be a discipline issue, however no amount of discipline is going to keep a 3 year old boy or a young girl from being who they are. that would take medication (Ritalin so parents don't have to deal/discipline) or breaking their spirit...

Now you have boundaries in your home and the parent should have respected those better, even if it's "natural" for the kids to explore. They have to learn that there are different rules in different places. One thing my kids have going for them is they act waaaay better out than when at home.

Yeah, my 8 year old is pretty well behaved.

The boy, 5, he is another story.

He will contradict you for no other reason than to contradict.

We could be backing out of the driveway and he'll say "you're going the wrong way". I say you don't even know where we are going, he responds "you're going the wrong way."

Grounding does not work, time outs do not work, a swat on the ass does not work. Even depriving him of stuff he loves, does not work. He just shrugs it off and says "OK".

He is a manipulative, conniving little spawn of Satan.

Good thing he is cute. It's the only thing keeping me from killing him.

Forget all the biblical images of the devil. This is the true face of evil.
