CA has historical plates if you only drive to a few events a year where I think you don't have to pass a smog test, but the car already has to be registered in CA to apply.
My wife drove with ohio plates in CA for more than a year with no problems. |

Don't think so....historical plates are for 25+ years old. I don't see any smog waiver in the regs if the car is newer than a 75, but qualifies as Historical.....

Hey in a couple of month the weather will be nice in Chicago, while California will be suffering through the fire season. Stay in Chicago and enjoy an afternoon at Wrigley Field.
The CUBS are going all the way. |

Not sure if where we will finally settle but will be renting for a year or so either in San Francisco or the east bay area. We're keeping the condo in IL and may end up spending a bunch of time there. SF may be a second residence for me.

(edit) but with you having two addresses, you may be able to choose which is officially home. I'd suggest you contact a California attorney on this one. Obviously Illinois wouldn't care because you are giving them money for the plates...

Just give up and buy a Prius. It'll be the law before long anyway.

Cool. Thanks. We're tentatively looking to rent a place around Walnut Creek before settling on something to buy. If anyone knows of any good rentals, east bay or downtown, let me know.

You can get away with out-of-state plates for a while, but eventually if you happen to get pulled over, you'll get absolutely REAMED by the state if/when they cross-check your information and find out you've been living here (W2 reporting can flag you and qualifies you as a "resident" - check the DMV web site for more info on this).
Believe me, CA wants your money and your soul and if you think you can outsmart them, good luck. They're VERY motivated to get at people's wallets right now and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if there's not a deliberate crackdown on out-of-state plates. There's no way on earth you'll pass smog with your car unless you happen to catch the smog guy sleeping or on a "bad hangover day". If you get flagged, you'll have the biggest nightmare of your life trying to get your car legally brought in and it'll cost you plenty. If you don't drive the car much, or only for track days it might be worth the risk of leaving the out-of-state plate on it and ONLY driving it to/from the track. You'll probably be safe then, unless you drive like a nut or draw attention to yourself (or have a very unlucky day). Don't park it on a public street with out-of-state plates. Eventually they'll notice you - that happened to me way back when I moved here in 1999 (my truck had out-of-state plates - I got away with it for a few months and then a parking enforcement guy called it in - I got a "courtesy call" from the P.D. informing me I needed to register in-state or I'd be cited).

Sounds like you're deciding between living in SF vs. commuting into The City.
http://www.rentalguide.com http://www.travel-mediainfo.com/San-Francisco/182096.htm If it was just me and my wife (no kids), working in SF and looking to rent, I'd live in The City, hands down. But that's me. Of course, a year or so of that could make you more than ready for the suburbs, depending on your likes/dislikes. Walnut Creek is definitely a good choice in the East Bay.

Make it a track car only. Get around the trailer by using a tow bar set up. Sounds like you hardly drive it on the street anyway. While I believe that SMOG is necessary in CA - the implementation could be better - i.e. with better exemptions for special interest vehicles.
Welcome to the state! George |

see the california dmv site:
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm#feesdue I haven't gotten a job yet, and the registration on my truck doesn't expire till next month, so I refuse to take off my Hawaii plates unless I absolutely have to... been pulled over once by CHP and they said I had 20 days to get cali plates and cali license...right.
