Looking at moving out of my parents house over the summer and am going to have have a roommate to pay the bills. But I have been picky and its going to be the one of my friends thats almost as picky as I am. Neither of us is a big partier so I aint to worried. Am pissing of another friend that wants to live with us but I know he is a slob and just wants to live with us so he can use our xbox's to play halo 24/7 because he is to cheap to buy his own. Then there is the factor that he will be the type that skips class for weeks on end and then wonders why the Prof says dont bother coming back. Best to nip these troubles off before they happen the way I see it.

Get used to the idea that he will probably be there 16/7 anyway.

You need your own place. After I moved out of the dorms I moved in with one of my buddies. He was clean and responsible. We moved in with a girl that I worked with. SHe was also pretty good. She moved out and the guy that replaced her was horrible (she and I worked with him). My college buddy and I eventually moved out to a 2 br place. We managed to mostly get along great for quite some time until I left the area. Finding a decent roommate can be a nightmare, and often "friends" are the best way to go about it. I have a work colleague that I think I could be a roommate with if he and I weren't both married, but if I was ever single again, I'd just be on my own.

You guys sound like a bunch of drunks.

If you want to get away from that, move.

I hate to say it, but in this life, there are going to be friends that never grow up, and its largely because of substance abuse. Don't be one of them.

Dude, you're growing up and they're not. Move out. Someday you'll be happily married and attending your kids' soccer games, while they will be sleeping off yet another hangover.

Move and find people more like yourself. I've spent 15 years living in large houses with lots of room mates. One place I was in for 4 or 5 years, and the people are very close friends to this day - thats 15 years later.

The house I rent out next door is a 5 bedroom place and one person (the lease holder) is in charge. Hehe, she's probably the biggest drinker, but cracks the whip in the morning and all the roommates do an equal share of the cleaning up.

The downside is it can occassionaly get a bit noisy next door, the upside is there is often topless girls sitting around sunbathing on the lawn.

Ha Schumi,
You're probably sleeping right now?

I've done a ton of room mate stuff.
From my first read I felt "lighten up", getting upset wont change nothing (not that I wouldn't get upset). All you can do is control yourself, you sure in the hell aren't gonna control these dudes? So you have to decide what you want. Let them know. If they can't respect it, then time to move on. Stay happy, you're finding out what you want by experiencing what you dont want; its life.

My room mates and I would have a ton of fun and sometimes it would get out of hand. I could tell endless stories about the bad mutherFers; of course I was just an angel. The worst thing was when my roomys used to get me beat up; happened more than once, but we'd always laugh about it after.

Room mates bring back some great memories for me!
I had two dicks for roomys in Toronto once; they worked 8-5 jobs in construction and I was in const mgmt; suit and tie; early twenties. I'd started to 'grow up'. One night roomy #2 literally cons me and drags me out to the pub; I did not want to go. I met my wife that night Best darn thing that ever happened to me! That room mate was and is still an idiot; ha.

Yea, I was posting up pretty early.. so I'm just getting to all of this.

I would like to get a place of my own (with a garage instead of just a carport!!!) but I don't think I can afford it right now being a professional student. I teach classes here which pays my rent and some tuition, but since I'm splitting rent it is cheap as hell.

A place of my own would mean getting a second job (third if you count the research I work on, which doesn't pay). No time for that this year.

I think I will just have to deal with this for a while. I think I will be heading somewhere else to do my doctorate's work so I will have a chance then to find something new. That will be another year from now.

A few years ago I moved in with my best friend and his roomy (female, not that attractive, but payed rent on time). After about a month his roomy started having this guy over. After about another month I noticed **** going missing. A quick talk with some Sheriff friends and a check on his plates/name revealed a conviction for Possession with intent to distribute and an active warrant. Next time he came over I was waiting at the door, 911 already on the phone and my 1911 right between his eyes.

Just get a place of your own. No roommates, pets, or any thing else. Really worked much better for me. Sure I was poor, but the 240Z had gas, skiing every Sunday, partied when I wanted, and usually just cleaned once a week. The ladies (and me) seemed to like the privacy and a clean place, even if the only nourishment was beer, frozen pizza and bologna. :>)

I had roommates at your age too.
I am a really organized type of person. The mess on the floor and dishes in the sink would drive me nuts.
What I used to do was every time there was something left out of place I would put it in a box and put it in his room.
Dirty dishes in the sink? In the box.
Beer bottles not in the trash? In the box.
He didn't like that and eventually started cleaning up after himself. He was either going to clean it directly in the sink or later from the box.
The partying didn't bother me. How could it, I was responsible for most of it.

Sounds like you might be in the same position. Just get some cardboard boxes from the grocery or liquor store and whenever there is **** around, put it in the box and set it in their rooms.
Just say "Here, this is your ****".

Had quite a round of roommates (all female) when I was in college. What a pain in the ass. The worst ones were the ones you thought you knew or were friends. Wound up kicking every one of them out.

Then I would advertise for a roommate and take a random stranger who kept her car clean, had a job and was a student. Great choices, both of them. I'd have twenty people answer the ad, but was lucky to find one person each time that met that criteria.

Then I got my own place and lived with no furniture except a bed for about four years. Loved it. Better to live like a pauper in peace than have extra money but live in a zoo.

Move, before you end up hating them. I wouldn't be able to stand living with some of my best friends. You sound a bit OCD (like me), find another friend that's neat and get a new place. Having had roommates, and knowing many others with roommates, people either not cleaning or not paying the bills are pretty easily the two biggest complaints. Find someone neat, not cheap, and with a job, you're set!

I had one HORRIBLE experience living in a 4 bedroom apartment. I was the only one with a real job, the other 4 were students or lazy. 2 out of 4 were filthy, which I should have known coming in. The final straw was when I locked my door one weeknight at 2 am because I was due at work at 7, and they broke it down trying to get me to come out. I packed my crap the next morning and told them all to f- off. Funny, because the TV, DVD, and surround sound were all mine. I never made that mistake again, and started to live with more responsible folks that were at least tidy.

I would suggest you buy a small place of your own...something manageable/affordable. Maybe big enough for one roommate. Two at the most. You can always kick them out if they don't live up to your rules.

I don't buy into the "investment" analysis or the tax deduction/"break" for home interest payments.

I DO buy into the $8000 tax credit you will get if you buy this year providing you have not owned a home in the last 3 years.

But perhaps MOST important at your age, the quantity and quality of your trim will increase. Chicks dig a guy with his own nest no matter how modest. Trust me...one of the first questions you will get when you bring a new one home is a subtle "Soooo...you rent this place?" When you respond "No, I'm buying it." they look at you in a whole different light.

They'll be throwin' that cat on you like pitcher on steroids.

So to follow up on this...

I'm going to be seeing my old friend with the house for sale next week some time. I'm going to ask some questions about it and see where I get. It's a two bedroom with hardwood floors, 1 really nice bathroom, small kitchen, basement, and a small 1 car garage. I remember that he was looking for $60K for it, which was what he paid for it back in 2003. It has been on the market now for almost a year. I've known this guy a while, he lives in Ohio now and is probably getting pretty sick of having a house for sale sitting back in Missouri. I rented the extra bedroom from him for a bit a few years back and really enjoyed the house and the neighborhood.

This is coming at a s***ty time unfortunately as I was hoping to buy another Porsche this summer to replace both my one 97 924S and my aging toyota daily driver. Kill two birds sorta deal, and pickup something like a 968 for a D.D. That will probably have to wait now.
