I used to love to speed when I was much younger, but now I take it to the track exclusively. The roads are just too crowded now, and those that are empty are often inhabited by bicyclists, so it's just too risky all-around.

I think I was influenced by articles like this road test of the 959:

Ha, I've remmembered quite a good story from my late uncle Peter. He was driving along the desert road FAST in his Ferrari and the radar detector went off big time. He piled on the brakes, drove back to the previous town, had lunch and looked around the army museum. When he carred on with his journey the police pulled him up and said we know that was you earlier. He replied that he had just driven up from Wellington and it wasn't him. They said oh yes it was. Yours is the only car all day that could go that fast. And let him go on his way.

Me: I drive a little under the limit in town, just over the limit on the open road, and as fast as I can on certain outback roads.

In all seriousness, I'm a pretty careful driver. No tickets or accidents for many, many years and (knock on wood), I've never even been pulled-over in the 996. Among the many things I like about driving in L.A. is that pretty much everyone is zipping along and you can get away with mild speeding most of the time if the conditions permit it. We have well designed roads and lots of traffic to move so move it does. (Most of the time). I'm happy to go slow when the conditions warrant it. There is a big difference between mild speeding and driving like an idiot, aggressive, etc...

I even try to drive as safely as possible at the track. And that is definitely the only place where the smell of burning rubber and clutch/brakes emanates from my car. I will zip along on Mulholland when it's clear but I will absolutely not drive in a fashion where I cannot change course or stop through a blind corner or bully slow-moving traffic ahead of me. The other night there was a WRX Subaru in front of me that wanted to play and I just let him go, I could see that he was not a good driver by the constant brake lights and I will not "push" someone or encourage them to drive recklessly. I'd rather have them think that they "dusted the Porsche" and hopefully slow down. It gets crazy in the canyons, people have the need for the thrill of speed but not the skill or judgement to do it safely. On the open road I will open it up if it's clear but the challenge is to not get a ticket. I've been 100% successful so far with countless x-country jaunts. YMMV.

Gawd, do I know this firsthand.

Last night I was in the 993 on I-17, which has plenty of cameras, most with warning signs. So of course, I slowed down for each one to about 5 mph under the limit. At the last one a group of bikes, some Harleys, some crotch rockets, screamed past me just as I was in line with the cameras. We saw multiple flashes. Even though I was definitely going under the limit and there's an 11 mph buffer above that, anyone who looks at those photos is gonna see the 993 and assume I was the guy speeding, no?

You sure you live in L.A.? The only times traffic is 'zipping along' in my L.A. is before 6AM and after 8:30PM, sometimes.... My 10 mile commute (405) is 10 minutes before 6AM, but 45-60 minutes at 6 PM, no matter which way I go. Weekends aren't much better, although there is clearly less traffic now that the economy is in shambles.

I don't spend much time on the 405. None, if possible. It zips where I drive.

There are still places that you could zip along around here but I really like Orange County. everyone goes 80 down there. Nuts. Heve any of you try the toll road. I think its Hwy73. very smooth and clean road. Last I was on it was my wife driving with our 1 year old. All I can think of was my 930. Didn't see any cops or anyone getting pulled over. I am too chicken to go fast due to the expense and maybe gang rape when I get to jail. I did hit 130 in 3rd with my 930 when they open up the new section of the 210 in Upland back a few.

I am always 10 over if I can. I don't drive fast like I did was when I was 20. Now I weave a little less also, not much. I think I was 19 or was it 20 a buddy and I tool a day off college and drove to Vegas in a little over 2.5 hours at 3 o'clock in the morning during the week. We couldn't gamble because we were under age. That was fun. Now you get caught doing 72 out in the open going to Vegas. Last year, CHP poped me doing 73 outside of Biship in the middle of summer. Made me open up my rear windows because he wanted to see the back of the van and woke up my 1 year old.

It is painful for me to drive the speed limit. Around town, I usually keep it to 5 over. Back and forth to school on the highway, I cruise between 85-95. When I have a nice clear stretch I will usually take it up to 105-110.

The speed limits around Chicago are ridiculously low at 55mph, but the nice thing is that when traffic is moving, it's moving at 80mph, so you can still make time.
