One of the nicer things about living in Michigan is that we have a ton of car guys here. We can only drive them for part of the year so most guys get them out at every chance.
I still get a thrill from hearing a big ol' lumpy cam in a hot rod. A buddy of mine grew up around 13 mile and Woodward, right behind Royal Pontiac. He tells me that, back in the 60's, he saw many of the "test" Pontiacs head out to Woodward.

I heard someone used to build cars there. Wonder if they will ever get back to that...

You and me both. My very first car, bought in 1976 when I was a mere lad, was a '67 GTO. Maroon with a black vinyl top, 400 4 speed... I still miss that car. Sold it for what I paid for it after a couple of years - $1,000. In pretty damn fine shape, at that. *sigh*

Vinny probably already knows this, as do others...the cars in his pics are the first "funny cars"...the altered wheelbases had someone commenting that "These cars look funny.", and the name stuck...the "funny cars" of today's pro racers are something totally different.

entertaining the idea

I was reading in Road and track(or Car and Driver, I confuse he two) today, and it had an article about Ford making a factory drag Mustang. Supercharged engine, stripped interior, etc. IIRC, production is for 50 or so a year at around $69,000. Dodge is following suit, but GM dropped plans for a factory drag Camaro.

What is the fastest 911/930 time, on the dragstrip?
Also, if an F1 car went to the dragstrip, what times and class would it be competitive with? Just curious. I do not have a sense of how fast purpose built drag cars are. |

Quote:
I'd guess a F-1 car would be in the 8 second bracket...but I could be wrong. A top fuel dragster is now well under 4 seconds from a standing start.. Lets say a top fuel dragster was standing still at the start line, and he took off the instant you passed that line at 150 MPH. He'd catch and pass you before you reached the finish line, a mere 1320 feet away.

a few years ago One of the hot rod mags ran a test with an Indy car. From what I remember it ran something like a 9 or 10 sec 1/4.

Pretty slow by today's drag racing standards, right Vinny?

I know they had a traction issue off the line with the indy car. It couldnt hook up.
Remember back when Pro Stocks where 9 second cars?? Look at them now. Running mid 6's Also, you have street legal Chevys and Stangs running '8's

Hmm, I did some looking, appears F1 cars are around mid-9 sec.
R&T tested an F1 Jaguar (year and driver unknown) at 9.4 sec 181 mph. Earlier R&T tested a 1986 Bennetton B186 (Fabi) at 9.4 sec 167 mph (0-60 was 3.0), this was at race boost so 850HP. The 1992 Williams FW14B (Mansell) reportedly had the following acceleration in qualifying trim (but don't know what 1/4 time/speed): 0 - 60 2.2 0 - 100 4.0 0 - 120 5.2 0 - 140 6.5 0 - 160 8.4 0 - 170 10.4 And I just watched a video from Fifth Gear, a goofy 1/4 drag between a F1 BAR Honda (Button), a bike, and a boat. The Honda is unable to use full throttle off the line and is just even with the bike until about 100 MPH, then it just runs away - according to the narrator, the downforce becomes strong enough to allow full throttle. The narration claims a 9 sec time for the Honda, but detailed results are not provided - the contest is just for entertainment. The bike does 11 sec.

I'm seeing 930s credited with 1/4 times anywhere from high-11s to 14.
Come to think of it, I recall a Pelican had a heavily modified 930 that he ran on the dragstrip. Somehow I think his name was Juan Ruiz? I haven't searched for his posts. Edit: ok, I found one, from 2005. "9.52 is for a 100% street legal 911, our other 911 is at 9.76 and working the way into that record, for a tub 911 the time is 9.16"
