Prediction time

The Kid comes back in the 1st 3rd of the season. Penguins finish 4th in the east but make a run in the playoffs & make it to the conference finals. Too be continued...

Yeah. He still hasn't been cleared to contact but has been skating in team drills.

Prediction time

My prediction: we will get daily updates on Crosby including how he feels, what he ate, and if he felt cold and put on a sweater. There are several fine players out due to concussion or injury but no one was the Paris Hilton-like media attention other than Crosby.

He doesn't request it. We want it. We eat it up.

I'm not sure who it would be, but if the greatest NFL player, the one who won the Superbowl in OT, the one who was a can't miss prospect from age 12, etc, etc, were to miss a season, you don't think the media would be all over it? Say. like the status of Payton Manning's neck?

Having lived through the Eric Lindros ("the Next One") saga in Philly, this seems all deja vu to me.

It's spelled "Peyton", BTW. But what should we expect from someone who professes love for GB? =)

Crosby is a very good player. I have enjoyed watching him play many times. Gretsky or Mario he's not (at least not yet). Maybe someday he will be great but, he still has a lot more in the "potential" column than in the record books. If he overcomes this challenge and goes back to playing the way he did he could be great.
Unfortunately Sid is part talent, part media hype to help the NHL bump up ratings. Kind of like Danica Patrick: a decent (but never great) driver that cashed in on all the media hype because she is a woman who is considered fairly attractive.

Ignorance is damn near as bad as jealousy. You compare a hot chick that has, at best average talent driving a race car to an NHL scoring Champion, Stanley Cup champion, MVP, amount I'm sure a whole lot more accolades.
Just trying to take the thread down the gutter?

Don't forget he also scored the winning Gold Medal Goal for Canada at the 2010 Olympics...

These things are noteworthy but not exactly stuff that automatically gets him in the hall of fame. There are lots of players that won a cup, a gold medal, and even a scoring championship. If you do it for many years you are a legend. Until then you have potential. If Sid can't fully recover from the concussion then it will be a shame but his lifetime achievement list will end up as slightly above average. Look at "Alex Ov-choke-kin": great skill but chokes in the big games. If he can't get past that, he'll be just a quality player as opposed to a super-star.
I'm impressed with what he's done so far but I'm not ready to bow down and worship at the altar of Crosby just yet.

25 years old and his career may be over, or at least seriously shortened. I was as tired of his "hey! why are you letting them hit ME!" antics as anyone but the guy is pretty messed up and deserves better.

I agree. All NHL players deserve better. Well maybe almost all. We sometimes forget that even a 4th line player is 100 times better than I ever hoped to be. Same with race car drivers. The guy or gal running 25th in a field of 25 is better than me on my best day.

World Junior, Stanley Cup, scoring title, Memorial Cup too I think, etc etc. Just another poser. Seriously?

He is the greatest and most accomplished player in the game today. Period. He has never failed to produce under pressure. Never. Not as a kid in Junior, not as a pro.

Slightly above average? Come on. Almost every player in the league would take his credentials and leave the game thrilled. He has amassed for more 'hardware' than any 'average' NHL player, and more total points than most players get in a career. It is apparent to me you really don't understand the way Canadians feel about hockey. Or the expectations of a nation.

Don't bow to him if he's not for you, but don't denigrate him. He is head and shoulders above Ovechkin, who has failed at everything except a watered down world championship.

Nobody but you has mentioned the Hall of Fame, nobody but you mentioned the word legend. He already IS a superstar. And nobody asked you to bow down to him. But obviously you feel he is worthy of that.
I also grow tired of the media's incessant coverage of our stars, (read Tommy Brady), but to belittle his skills, accomplishment to date, and to compare him with chokers, (read this... he has NEVER choked, unlike your poor example), and average race car drivers makes you look very small and I don't think you are. You are a hockey fan. There is no reason to trash Crosby just because we all get our fill of the superstars of sport, (I'll throw up the next time I hear the word Favre).
Root for your Brunes, (and if he played for the Brunes you'd be defending him like a mother bear protecting her cub), but that no reason to trash the best player in the game. And YES he is.

+1 - other than it's not a Canadian thing, (although I know you Canucks LOVE your game ), it's a hockey thing.

Can we now get back on subject????

1990 & Buck: Wow. calm down sparky. You guys are missing one very important part of my statement: "If Sid can't fully recover from the concussion then it will be a shame but his lifetime achievement list will end up as..."

If he continues with his winning ways then his total lifetime stats will be phenomenal. Tyler Seguin won a Stanley Cup in his NHL rookie year at the ripe age of 19. The kid shows a lot of potential but that one stat doesn't make him great (obviously he was lucky to be with the right team). If he wins 3, 4, or 5 more cups over his lifetime then he has some bragging rights.

It would be sad if Crosby's career is over but, what he has racked up to date is not enough to make him the greatest ever. If he stopped playing I would agree he possibly could have been the greatest but, unless he keeps playing he doesn't earn that title yet. Think about racing: after a race ending accident, most drivers will say "I believe we had a car that could have won today". "Could have" ain't the same as "done did it". Nes pa?

Again Joe, no one has called Crosby the greatest ever and I don't think he will be. We all know it's Gretzky, (although I'd argue Mario would have been under the same rules as Gretzky played under and his health issues.)

So give us a prediction. (A serious one!)

Crosby needs to just shut it down for the year, get healthy. what does he have to prove and to who?, is it his job to sell tickets for Pittsburgh or score goals for years to come, risky if you ask me
