We have a good Kitchen Aid DW with the stainless interior. Almost 5 years now and it's not missed a beat. It's not all that quiet but it does get the dishes clean...I pre-wash everything that goes in... My parents are big into Bosch cause it's sexy and Euro...I have to say they have also had great luck with the unit. Sorry not much help.

Bosch unit has been in place for 12 years. Does a great job of cleaning and has had no repairs. It is so quiet that you can hardly hear it.

Our GE Profile sucks and I'll be replacing it after 3 years, so this thread really helps. DO NOT buy a GE appliance, whatever you do!

I may be late to the party here but our Kitchen Aid dishwasher is HORRIBLE. The electronics fritz out, and even when it's working as it should, it's cleaning ability is pathetic. I've never been so disappointed. We have a little 24-in GE Monogram in our condo in the city and it's amazing. I've never had a Bosch dishwasher but we do have Bosch washer and dryer, and they've been flawless.

I'm using cheap-a$$ Whirlpool which I bough at IKEA (where else?). Works well, is quiet but lacks some stuff my old Bosch had. Most importantly, Bosch had electrically operated valve on the end of water hose (just where it connects to tap). I have been explained that this is a safety feature...should water hose to washer burst, Bosch won't leak as valve is just behind the connection.

Whirlpool valve is in the machine itself, so burst hose will spew water on my floor.

But I found Whirlpool machine user-friendly.

Charles, sorry about the fire, glad it was not worse. I always hate to see the damage these cause peoples homes, we try to keep it to a minimum but with a bunch of dumb fireman stopping through your hose in big boots sometimes we make a bigger mess. i hope your experience with the fire dept. was ok given the circumstances.

Thx glewis80sc- the fire guys were great. Got to the house in lightening speed with way more trucks and equipment than were needed. Got the burning dishwasher out in under a minute, contained and put out the fire, and were vigilant in making sure there was no smoldering fire in the walls or floor. They saved our house.

We were very lucky. The Bosch takes a long time to run on regular wash- about 90 minutes. It was extremely quiet, I have to give it that. We used to turn it on before going to bed, and frequently ran it when were away from the house. It was just by luck that were up a little later and my wife went into the kitchen. We saw the smoke and flames before the smoke detectors deployed.

The smoke from the burning insulation is amazingly thick and noxious- one whiff and you're ready to pass out.

So the take home is do not run such an appliance unattended, and if there is any hint of smoke coming out of it- call 911 say you see flames- and get the hell out of the house!

Say, I think those fumes may have caused my bladder cancer- better look out Bosch!

Thanks for all of the input. I'm going to put the Kitchen Aid in and see how it does... mostly because it's ready to go. I like features of both, but after walking by both of them in the garage for a couple of days I have to say that I prefer the cleaner front of the Kitchen Aid - it has the controls on top of the door. We'll see how it goes. I hope when I do get around to taking the Bosch apart that there's something blocking the impeller and I can resell it with a clear conscience.

We bought the Bosch SHE58C05UC_54 in July 2009 and run it daily (big family and my wife loves to cook). It's quiet and cleans very well. In short, we're extremely happy with it!

Don't let the Bosch name trick you into thinking its a wonderful German machine. My sister worked in the Bosch plant in NC. She would NEVER buy a Bosch large kitchen appliance. I have had good luck with KitchenAid in the past. My current Frigidaire is quiet but doesn't clean near as well as the old Maytag we replaced.

I have had great success with posting an "offhand" comment on companies facebook pages. Nothing inflammatory (pun not intended) just something that highlights the situation and gets their attention.

"I purchased XYZ 18 months ago and was surprised that it failed..."

You WILL get a response.

Have fun with this. The internet really does bring power to the individual.

Holy resurrected thread, Batman!

Coming up on four years and the used Kitchenaid is still humming right along. There have been a few little rust spots on the racks, but I've kept them touched up as I see them. Two spots on the lower racks have been done a couple of times, so I coated them with the rack repair goo and after that dried coated it with clear silicone. They seem to be good now.
