went antique browsing with my wife, and had a good time?

my wife saw this huge group antique sale going in a park. she really wanted to check it out. i gave up and pulled the u-turn.

well, working quickly past all the blue hairs selling plates and cheapo costume jewelry, i found a group of seasoned, grizzled TOOL GUYS! damn. they had some really cool stuff. i found two antique 10" hi carbon chef knives. super sharp. i shaved my arm hair with one. the handles were tight, but beaten. he wanted $30, which i felt was high. he also had military stuff. he had this WWI, artillery aiming device, a that is a mix between a compass and theodolite.. what almost took my money was an old german switchblade. someone broke the blade but he found a correct replacement blade. apart $100, he rebuilds it $200. i got away with a simple $5, 1940's hi carbon butchers knife in excellent condition. it will be put into large game butchering service. i sharpened it like a lazer in seconds. it is made by forgecraft.

i may let a pro put a longer life edge to it. mine folds over quick.

Warning...you know you're old when you find yourself at an antiques fair, saying; "I remember those..."

Shyte another SPOON collector is born...

Next ya will be telling us of all the Spoon scores ya made at those sales....AND your next stop is to find those weekly estate auctions...you start with those and you are done...as they say once you do black you can't go back...

YOu know how much good stuff is sold at those auctions..and once you see the prices vs what you pay in the store...you ain't never payin WASP retail again...

Back in sept 97 I started with those weekly Abells Auctions in SO CA...geezus the art I scored back then...$550 for a then $7000 painting, (last year that was a $20,000 painting), and every week it was more of the same...

When istarted I had a Davenports Art Price Guide of listed artists...today ya just go to Art Net or Ask Art on the Net...that is to check out the style and genre of the artist along with his price structure...and a good eye for quality...thats it...

I am a sucker for yard sales. Antique shops tend to be over priced.

Antique shops are almost always overpriced unless you know something about the product that the person selling it doesn't (and it does happen more than you think).

One of the best things to go to are the antique marts that are held out in some guy's field in the middle of nowhere. You can score some seriously great stuff for very little. Of course, even better than that is to get yourself connected to the people who deal in the items you're interested in through the various guilds or organizations that they have.

I paid $900 for a Paul McCobb wall unit that I found on Craigslist of all places--they're on the net at auction houses for $4000-$4800 typically. The guy I bought it from had second thoughts about selling it due to my quick response--he didn't do his homework. Finding a deal is a rush like no other...

Late 1940's Bavier & Toso Murano lamps with paper labels still attached....$900

On Modernist websites ...$5000 to 9000 for lamps of similar vintage and style

well i have arrived at a happy medium with my better half. she goes antiqueing and i go to gun stores. great excuse to fire up the 911 and go to payson/prescott/flagstaff. i drop her off, and off i go to gun stores. dont mind looking at antiques, but when you go to enough of them you soon realize not alot of turnover and you end up looking at the same items over and over. have found here that after about 3-4 months its worth taking another look as items have sold and new items have arrived,

and yes............I AM OLD and i do recall ALOT of items from my youth now.

have found quite a few really cool lionel train sets. tempting. but a stainless national match springfield M1-A has also been rolling around in the back of my mind also. mmmmmmmmm yummy!

Do you think I would be so sloppy as to leave a Hustler Magazine in a picture I intended to uploaded to the Net? Do you notice that the name "Hustler" is easily readable and unmistakable? So what do those 2 facts lead you to think?

My wife and I love antique shopping and admiring old houses, barns, cars, etc... Once in awhile we find something really cool and buy it but most of the time we just look and admire.
