So how far did the spring go and how much damage did it do before it stopped?

An excellent question.

No damage - I mentioned I'm lucky right?

Lucky and stupid.

I was taking a nap. I'm good - it's at the mechanics - he says he'll fix it on monday. Shouldn't cost too much - I should have taken it to him for this in the first place.

I've tossed my spring compressors so that I am never ever tempted to use them again.

The biggest problem (outside of my vastly poor judgement) was that I could compress the springs enouch to get the strut assembly apart but not to get it back together. (I did not uncompress the spring in between). I didn't any trouble with the springs or clamps moving during compression or anything like that. I was surprised.

In the end though, as I was putting it back together in the car - I did something stupid and it all came apart. The spring didn't fully decomress but it sure tried to. Luckly (did I mention I was lucky?) it was being held together by the car at this point so it couldn't completely decompress but the scary part was that it started to go sideways (as a spring'll do on you when a spring wants you to know who is boss).

That's when I was ready to tag out.

Again I am reminded that I am not a car guy - I am just a guy who used to work on my cars out of necessity - not desire.

Ha, that's not even close to the stupidity I'm capable of. See how smart you feel after you've dropped your engine and transaxle (twice), only to find the problem was only that the clutch cable needed adjusting.

Or a friend who while in the midst of a Carrera chain tensioner install suddenly decided to adjust his valves, losing his chain timing!

Glad you didn't get hurt.

A long time ago I was dating a girl who had an old POS honda civic. She had hit a curb and bent one of the front struts.

I snagged a new strut, but at the time all I had was a one car garage and most of my tools were in storage. I improvised and with a scissors jack and a couple of strategically placed 2x4s I used the garage door opening to jack against and compress the strut. It was a human mouse trap waiting for an excuse to snap, but it worked and I got the job done in 30 minutes.

REally? I saw lots of guys on the volvo speed forum who had done it (pictures proved it). My compressors were just barely adequate to do the job. Towards the end trying to compress the spring even more for reinstallation was just making me too nervous. If I had compressors with double hooks on both sides I think I would have been fine with it. Mine (the ones in the garbage now) had single hooks on one end.

Rolling... on... the... floor... laughing.

Seriously, that's the funniest thing I've read on here in a long time.

I think I hurt myself.

Why would you need jack stands?

I'm kidding. Of course, and since I cleaned the garage, they're easily identifiable now.

Regardless, I should just buy the lot off of you and be done with it. But that's another conversation. Glad you're ok.
