A first class ass whipping at the selected time of your choosing. Prize is non transferable and can not be replaced. Ass whipping is given by weight and not volume, some settling may occur during delivery.

During the time spent upgrading the suspension I learned about driving with all sorts of different handling. Too much front spring, too much rear spring, too much rear sway bar, too much front sway bar, all sorts of setups.
Finally after getting all the parts on we did a setup. Disconnected the sway bars and adjusted the shocks to full soft. Then did a skid pad test to make sure the springs were balanced. They were. Then came doing the skid pad cranking up the sway bars until the speed the car broke loose started to drop, and making sure the front and rear broke at the same time, ie. neutral no steady state understeer or oversteer. I was surprised to find you could have too much sway bar. The the really interesting bit. We set the rear shock rebound to control how loose the rear got under braking and the front shock rebound to control the understeer/oversteer when adding full throttle to exit a corner. |

General principle and absolute boredom on my part.

After all the suspension changes not only was I faster than ever, once in a while I was setting FTD.
I did notice that when transitioning into a turn the car felt like it was rocking. Kinda like a coffee table with one short leg. We did a corner balance and found the right front was 1/16" short. Just that small adjustment took 2 full seconds off my lap times making me the one to beat. |
After all the suspension changes and getting faster times I started having brake overheat problems. And yes, brake overheat problems at an autocross. I had to go to race pads and slotted rotors. It wasn't because they weren't working good enough. It was because they were smoking at the end of every lap and I was having to change brake fluid after every event to get rid of the spongy pedal.

i went through all of that because I wanted to show I do have some experience in car setup before making suggestions to others.
A couple of the things I found is that a car setup for a track isn't necessarily going to handle it's best at an autocross and visa versa. It has to do with speed and corner radius. A car set up for the slower tighter corners of an autocross will oversteer like crazy on the much bigger faster turns of a track. And a car setup for the bigger faster turns of a track will understeer in the tighter slower corners of an autocross. Also when getting on the throttle at the track the torque does not have as much effect on both wheel spin and front to rear weight transfer as in the lower gears at an autocross. Also a very wise man once told me. "Do what everyone else does and you will merely be competitive. Do something different and you will win." That comment came right after, "If you hung a bag of **** on your front bumper and set FTD, everyone else would start running with a bag of **** on their front bumper wouldn't they?" |
Now, all that being said...
Body flex. All cars have some body flex. Some more than others. In handling this falls under the adjustment category of springs and sway bars. Balance your car to break loose neutrally under slight acceleration in a skid pad circle the radius of the average turn you are racing in. This will naturally setup the car to include any body flex. My 944 Turbo flexed enough that the unibody panels popped like an oil can in transition. |
Richard is on a roll... :D

Evening guys
|
thanks for the posts. richard. this is good information.
hey, guys. |
what a total unproductive day. I learned a few things, probably gave Slodave a few laughs and totaled an expensive piecce of wood in the process. I was able to fix the jig and the next piece will go right. It had better or Rick will here the yell from my house to his.

I was not laughing at all, David. That's not something I would do.

i am being sarcastic. Now if you can find that fool named Murphy hold him down while I club him with the rest of the plank. I did find a use for the remaining chunck, it will become the test bed for all other cuts.

on a lighter note I have given blood to the the project. two sliced fingers and a scuffed thumb. lets hope I can run a mouse in the am..............
